Hi We have a 120 year old house which has a raised ground level on one of the external walls, approx 3ft high. The house was built like this originally and you can see the wall is 4 brick thick where the ground level is raised. Above this it is 2 brick thick. There is no visable...

weather strip (wooden one on the bottom of the door)

just had a thought, I intended to attach it through the front of the strip and into the door, for no other reason than that is how a friends is attached that I looked at the other day. But surely a better option is to drill and screw it from inside the door?? Its a fairly new (1 year old)...

weather strip (wooden one on the bottom of the door)

I'm not sure this is the right name for it, as I thought a weather strip was the metal bit in the door step, but anyway, I have one and need to fit it. But which way round does it go? Its got a slot running on both sides so could go either, but one side is 5.5cm and the other side is 4.5cm...

who should I get to check structural concerns?

Hi All and thanks again for your comments I have read through the report this morning and it has more holes in it than my supporting beams. Enough caveats to make it next to useless. I think next time I buy a house I will only employ a specialist to check on specific areas I have concern...

who should I get to check structural concerns?

Hi guys and thanks for taking a look One of my main concerns is what I guess is called the main ridge beam of the house. We are an end terrace and it is not tied into the gable wall at the end. It is some 8" short of the wall. One of the 2 main structural beams, that look like they were...

who should I get to check structural concerns?

Hi All We purchased our house in April 07 and had a "full structural survey" carried out by someone independent of the mortgage company. I've recently been up in the loft and have some concerns over a few things that I would consider obvious and would have expected to see in the report...

using sawdust and woodglue as a filler in floor boards

Hi there I recently laid some reclaimed pine floor boards. going to sand and hard waxoil them this weekend. There are a few small holes in the boards, some old nail homes, others where the odd chunk has been taken out over time. My question then is can I collect up some of the sawdust...

finish for recliamed pine floorboards Oil ok?

Hi all further reading has shown up This site and a product that I see some of you have recommended. I see that this would replace the wax or oil finish with something that does both. Is it realistic that it will stop major damage to the floor inside the main front door way? (wet feet...

finish for recliamed pine floorboards Oil ok?

Hi All I've seen lots of suggestions for finishes on the forum and around the web, but would really appreciate some of your expert advice. Have just laid a floor in my living room of reclaimed pine floorboards. I have a couple spare so want to try out some finishes first. I am sanding...

another router question - oak worktops will 1/4 inch do?

hi all Great, 1 cutter sounds like more my budget! I might get 2 just incase. the 30mm bush guide and cutters I was going to pickup from screwfix. The worktop jig is 15mm thick, that added to the 20mm depth is 3.5mm. I'm guessing the bit doesn't extend below the base of the router plate? if...

another router question - oak worktops will 1/4 inch do?

I'm picking up the router tonight so I'll measure up everything and work out what I need. Bit alarmed that I'll need 2 cuts for every bolt hole!! There are 3 bolts so thats 6 holes (3 on each side) so you say I'll need 12 cutters??? eeek!

another router question - oak worktops will 1/4 inch do?

great stuff. The router bit suggested was a 1/2" 12.7mm x 63mm straight bit using a 30mm guide bush. Will I be able to get the same size cut using 1/4" bits? are erbauer bits from screwfix good enough? maybe I should get a few?

whats the minimum / max depth levelling compound can go to?

Hi Matty Here is a shot of the gap between the two rooms. as you can see there is no dpm in the gap. There is a part in the gap where it is higher than the rest as well. http://www.flickr.com/photos/mickthetree/2699590846/ As I said, 3" deep and about 10" across. about 2m long too...

whats the minimum / max depth levelling compound can go to?

Hi Matty I took it out as on closer inspection it was loose anyway. It has left a gap 10" wide by 3" deep and there is no dpm in this section. I have cleaned it all out and plan on putting a dpm in the gap and filling with concrete. I guess I might still need to use acrylic based as...
