    Calculating radiator size

In the process of redecorating our main bedroom now & replacing the woefully undersized and badly positioned radiator. Are there any calculator program type things which would help us choose the best size rad for the room? Very approximately 4m square insulated cavity walls. 2.4m window...

    Picture of the week

I'd agree - that sort of thing seems quite common where ovens get on a bit and the door seals start to break down leakin out alot of hot hot heat!

Sounds interesting but means nothing. could you elaborate for those of us still learning? If the cooker is at fault, why would plugging another appliance trip? And what was the fix? Cheers!

    drainage channels - with pics

BCO only wanted to hear about the wall opening & beams etc. Required a building notice only so not much else has been stipulated at present.

    drainage channels - with pics

I just drew on it using a photo package! Think it was MGi Photosuite. Regarding foundations - It is in the plan - just not sure how deep / how necessary. What are the rules? And can anyone suggest opinions on just bricking up to the render level then using thermalite (or equivalent) or...

    drainage channels - with pics

Well job is moving on regardless..... Engineers plans have been forwarded on to BCO regarding wall opening & RSJ / PFC supports. Site building team from my work will be called in for that job. Channeling has been ordered - but on advice, I've also got a 600mm lintel to go in the 2nd...

    drainage channels - with pics

Picture below shows an alley way I'm planning to brick off. It'll then be knocked through to effectively enlarge the garage to the right (in the picture). Red lines indicate where the single skin brick wall will be constructed tieing not toothing into surrounding walls. At present...

    Garage roof - bedroom above

Can someone give advice on building regs? I'm opening my garage out a bit by knocking a side of the garage through into a walkway which is between the old house and garage. When the garage was built, a new master bedroom was added upstairs above the walkway and garage. The wall having a...

fair do's. Sounds like my engineer's report will do for the BCO and I'll just call in a competent builder for the rest. Cheers lads.

    Structural engineers role

Thats what I would have thought, but the plans have the caveat 'fabrication drawings must be submitted to engineer two weeks prior to manufacture'. Aah well - we'll work something out. Could well be to do with the fact the engineer doesn't know the depth of the foundations without digging.

    Structural engineers role

No - to give the company credit, I do have a comprehensive set of calculations and diagrams. Specifications state 178x102UB19 beam and 100x50 PFC with details of all necessary fixing flanges and bolt holes. It just seems strange that with all this info I'm still being told I need to get a...

    Structural engineers role

Just recieved plans back from my engineer. I'm having a 3m hole knoched in the side of my garage wall to open it up a bit. Bedroom up above so it needs a lintel fitted. One end is being supported by existing brickwork, the other with a PFC. Question is - should the engineer provide...

DIY TIP OF THE DAY- Bath Edging Trim.

doesn't sound like a bad fix to me. Our bathroom was fitted by the previous (builder) owner and underneath the existing bath edging quadrant I've found a huge gap between wall / tiles / bath. No amount of professional silicone will make a neat job of that. And B&Q tried to charge me £20...

chase out dead wiring or leave in situ

Yeah - thats what I thought. Better to do the job propperly once & for all. Job done - now for a bit of filling!

chase out dead wiring or leave in situ

I've just disconnected a couple of wall lights in my upstairs bedroom and re-routed the wiring from up in the loft down through a central rose instead. Should I bother chasing out the old wiring from the walls or just plaster over the ends and leave the rest in situ? Its dead from both...

    Cooker Cable requirements

Sorry to jump in on this thread - I'll start another if this question warrants more than a yes/no answer. We've just inhereted a nice Bosch halogen combined hob/oven/grill rated at 9.6Kw. Our Cooker connection switch is I believe wired with 4mm cable to the CU (only about 2m away) where it...
