    Plastering over gloss paint

I have a section of plasterboard with gloss paint painted directly onto it - what preparation do I need to do prior to applying multi-finish? I was going to key it then slap on a load of PVA.

Prep prior to laying turf in my awful condition soil

Thanks for the reply. I've lost track of the levels but some has been removed already so don't want to go much further. I'll ditch the heavy clay sections then top up with fresh top soil and sharp sand (assume the sand is for increasing drainage). I have no idea why it's all so patchy -...

Prep prior to laying turf in my awful condition soil

After some advice on how to prepare my back garden prior to laying turf, or if seed may be a better option. The garden is all mud at the moment but a mixture of heavy clay, some reasonable looking top soil, sharp sand, shingle, cement - all left from the previous occupant when they had...

    Find my leak

Made a little progress this weekend with the use of a heating engineer. Traced the pipe from the back of the pressure vessel and it loops into the overflow from the tank in the loft. He was checking some other pipework and said a ball valve was stuck plus some other issues with the routing...

dot and dab an awkward length wall

There should be no problem with it bonding but you'll get cracks in the joint if you skim, so position it well.

    dot and dab questions

The glue is going to be about 18mm thick when you do it so consider that. Wet the brick work so the moisture doesn't get sucked out too quickly - a saturated wall is a bad idea though.nmake sure all dust is hoovered and wiped off when you're going that. Not sure what mechanical fixings...

boarding up an internal doorway without getting cracks later

The scrim might help but it'll more than likely crack very quickly. Could you add a small rebate to avoid the cracks? Or use it as storage space with shelves?

    Warm roof in old building

No photos they I can see. Batons and a new ceiling will be sufficient and helps sound proofing by having the extra layer. What's happening with lighting?

Any pipe work outside? Get a damp meter on it.

Turf on hard clay - topsoil or rotovate and sharp sand?

My situation is quite similar to this so may as well revive the thread. I have a gentle sloping garden (around 6m in length) which slopes towards the house. I'm stacking sleepers, at the front, to split the planned lawn with some paving. I'm adding a c100mm section of pea shingle between...

    Wall stains in chapel

Possibly but why would it only appear at the joint between old and new plaster? If the issue is how porous one of the finishes is, I'd expect the whole of the new surface to be patchy, not just at the joint. Somebody else has suggested some form of chemical reaction at the joint - either the...

    Wall stains in chapel

I’m after some advice on some staining on walls. The stains are on an internal wall in a renovated chapel that is damp internally and very wet at low levels. This is a known issue we did not attempt to rectify. The building’s construction is a ragstone outer skin, brick inner skin and a...

    Find my leak

Found the pipes in the loft but lost track of them under the insulation so will look again during the week. They go into flexi hose the trail across the loft.

    Find my leak

Thanks for your help, I'll hopefully get to it over the weekend.

    Find my leak

Almost certainly it will be somewhere I cannot get to without ladders that I don't have. Assuming this is the problem, is there any issue leaving it without fixing anything? I'm not concerned about having to top-up the pressure every few days as long as it isn't damaging pipework/my boiler etc.

    Find my leak

Pass - no idea where that will go to and it'll be very high level. I'll try and trace it to the loft for an idea but it's a three storey property.
