How do I bury pipes in concrete slab?

Hi- I'm burying 15mm barrier mains water pipe, and CH barrier in a kitchen concrete slab before Jabfloor insulating it. (Basically I think it will be easier than chanelling out the underside of the Jabfloor for the pipes). Is something like JG 15mm conduit OK for this? Or is 22mm easier/...

Insulating upstands- what to do if in middle of room?

Hi- Putting in new insulated concrete floor. Upstands to prevent thermal bridging usually hide under skirting, but can anyone tell me what to do if the new floor is the middle third of a room (like the filling in a sandwich) between two already concrete areas? Can I screed over top of the...

Is concrete mixed by volume or weight, or not too important?

Doing a mix of 4:2:1 concrete (20mm gravel, grit sand, cement). Worked out weight I need of each from general calculators. When mixing, I guess the cement is the heaviest, so should I mix roughly by weight or will by volume be near enough for a C20 domestic floor slab? Thanks.

Is ST4/ C20 the way to go for domestic concrete slab?

Hi- putting 6m2 100mm concrete slab over foundations/ DPM before Jabfloor & screed. I believe ST4/ C20 is the way to go. Can anyone verify? Thanks.

Are JG Speedfit plastic 15mm stop valves suitable for mains?

Thanks- quite right- user error- not 1/2 inch though! shouldn't have doubted the wonderful JG- washed them out, looks like grit in each one- just enough for tiny leaks.

Are JG Speedfit plastic 15mm stop valves suitable for mains?

Just fitted two of these(two mains coming into house), pipe sliced copper (so no burrs) each side, marked depth of insertion carefully on pipes (about 3cm), in a straight line, so no pull to the sides, and both are leaking on one side. It doesn't say not suitable for mains on the pack, but says...

Stopcock handle just sheared off! Any suggestions??

Hi- thanks for this. Yes- in closing it, I put a great deal of force on as it wouldn't fully shut off. On opening it, similar force the other way, but with an odd 'give' just after I opened it... Then it was in my hand! Got it just open enough afterwards with mole grips and expletives, but...

Stopcock handle just sheared off! Any suggestions??

Hi- 1930's lead pipe with brass stopcock inside house- shut it to do work, opened it and left with horizontal handle in my hand- sheared off vertical rod. Any (polite) suggestions?! If turned off at road, could internal mechanism in the stopcock be screwed out and replaced with new handle...

    CH pipes through Jabfloor- how?

Hi- Putting 100mm Jabfloor on a concrete slab. Now.... not sure if this is a flooring or plumbing question, but.... Jabfloor states It is permissible to accommodate services within the thickness of the insulation provided pipes etc. are securely fixed to the concrete floor....not closer...

Conduit on mains coming out of ground into new concrete?

Hi- thanks for this. Yes, its water mains. I'm planning a conduit as the pipe comes up within a foot or so of the floor where the 10 cm concrete is proposed, so not planning to concrete a load of lead in, but connect to plastic. As for the lead, it used to run through the house, but has been...

Conduit on mains coming out of ground into new concrete?

Hi- I'm putting in a new insulated concrete slab floor (hardcore, concrete on DPM, then Jabfloor etc.) where currently there's a joisted wooden floor. Just lifted some boards, and I have a mains supply lead pipe coming out of the ground (which is too massive a job to replace) and then it...

Insulating upstands in middle of concrete floor?

I have a domestic concrete kitchen floor, with middle third wood on joists. I am filling in middle third with concrete (hardcore, DPM, 100mm concrete, 100mm Jabfloor, VCL, 65 screed) in order to tile over the lot. My question is, where the insulation upstand is required at the edges of the...

Which latch/ closing device for a domestic fire door?

Hi- Can anyone please advise if I need a specific type of fire-resistant latch (and does it too need intumescent pads) when fitting a 30 min domestic fire door? Also, I guess the door-closer needs to be fire rated too. Are concealed closers acceptable/ any good? (The door weighs 40kg and...

Floor tiles cracking at wood/ concrete join.

Hi Richard- Thanks for getting back. This link should work now! http://www.ciwem.org/knowledge-networks/panels/water-supply--quality/lead-in-drinking-water.aspx Sorry, but I disagree that, 'it may be more of a risk than your link appears to be implying' but this is probably because you...

Floor tiles cracking at wood/ concrete join.

Will probably replace pipe anyway, but just found this on Interweb, which appears to be reassuring- In the UK corrective treatment has been promoted, as opposed to the widespread replacement of lead pipes, as an appropriate first stage of achieving the new European standards for lead in...

Floor tiles cracking at wood/ concrete join.

Well there's actually a join to copper as it comes into the kitchen underfloor, so it's lead back to the property boundary through about 8m of garden. Well it knew it wasn't ideal, but I didn't realise the risks were so great since just about every 1930's house has this, and we have hardwater...
