    Plastering woodwork and door linings

Well in this case I am the joiner and general bodger. But it doesn't sound like anyone is about to tell me that I have made some kind of catastrophic error and am a total tit so hopefully that is my question answered... Thanks again

    Plastering woodwork and door linings

Cheers for that, do usually leave a gap then between the bead and the frame?

    Plastering woodwork and door linings

Hi, had some help from a few of you already and starting to get the knack of plastering (touch wood) but one thing I didn't really think about too much was what to do around woodwork like door frames. Do you usually leave a gap to prevent cracks around things like door linings? I have a...

Plasterboarding over lathe ceiling and then skimming

Cheers guys.. inclined to go for the bodgers option though and just hope it's ok, taken enough sacks of crap to the tip already!

Damp Proofing before Rendering and Plastering

I probably hijacked this thread.. too much coffee today or bored of work etc. Treat the cause is I am sure what you will be told to do before finishing inside.

Damp Proofing before Rendering and Plastering

Actually looking at that in more detail again, any reason you are considering sand and cement render? I.e. easier to work with etc? Are you a novice plasterer intending to do the plastering yourself? Also if you are not living there is the heating on? How long has it been empty? Does it have...

Damp Proofing before Rendering and Plastering

Yes there are various tanking agents you can use which are quite expensive if you are going to apply to whole walls. You could use some cheap wickes bitumen paint which you actually paint over a thin sand and cement skim and then "blind" with sand prior to plastering over with normal bonding and...

Damp Proofing before Rendering and Plastering

So to clarify what I mean by that you could waste a load of time and effort damp proofing stuff that doesn't need it or you might cover something with rock hard sand and cement render only to have it all fall off again in 3 months. I am sure more experienced bods will probably echo that...

Damp Proofing before Rendering and Plastering

I'm no damp expert, but if they are above ground level I would take some time to try and get to the bottom of what is causing it first. I am doing a similar project and had damp patches in my two upstairs bedrooms. Several damp inspectors, plasterers etc came around and no one offered any...

Damp Proofing before Rendering and Plastering

How can you tell water is coming in? I would guess whoever responds to this will want to know whether it is still wet, above or below ground level (retaining walls etc), why you took all the plaster off. In short try and figure out why it is wet first. Some Damp patches could be nothing to...

Plasterboarding over lathe ceiling and then skimming

Hi, tried to find similar threads but they all seem to be about jointing and filling! I have some old ceilings with massive cracks and intend to plasterboard over them and then skim myself. The questions I need to answer though are; 1. It is correct I should use square edge boards when...

    My first room!

Hi Prenticeboyofderry. Any particular reason you think it has had it's day? Just to be clear I am not claiming to know otherwise, however I have just done my first bit of amatuer plastering on something looking very similar. A couple of different plasterers including a friend recommended...

    Missing front door interior lintel

Thanks Noseal. Only problem I can see if that this might require removing the bricks actually supporting the joist underneath due to the limited space available. I take it the light duty Catnic would probably not be recommended as suitable but seeing as there is masonry supporting the joist...

    Preparation for bonding/hardwall coat

I take it by a tight coat you mean almost like a skim of bonding floated rather than just scratched and a bit rough? Thanks again

    Missing front door interior lintel

Hi, I have an old victorian terrace where the front door has been replaced with PVC. The stone lintel in the front skin of the wall is in place, however all the windows etc have timber internal lintels. At the front door I have removed some plaster and discovered there is no internal lintel...

    Preparation for bonding/hardwall coat

Hi Alastair, I have been building up with bonding where it was back to brickwork and have my window reveals plaster boarded ready to go and a couple of other bits skimmed. Where my bonding will meet up with existing plaster should I scrim tape or something similar the join in order to...

    Preparation for bonding/hardwall coat

hi, yeah funny that an old mate has done the rewire and one of them is almost an inch deep behind the plaster, not sure if that's going to be a problem. I suppose it would just mean sticking longer screws on the fixture anyway. Will give him a buzz and find out.. Cheers

    Preparation for bonding/hardwall coat

Hi Alastair, One more ting! Would the plasterer normally seat the knockout boxes I take it? I.e unscrew them level them up with the new skim so set about 3mm proud and then just fill the sides with bonding to hold them in at the right depth and level?
