    Grrrrrr, god damm leaking cistern!!

I'm seriously fed up with this cistern (close coupled toilet from B&Q). I've sorted one leak and now another. Where the flush valve goes through the bottom of the cistern it will not stop seeping, which results in the top of the pan filling up with water and the water seaps out between where...

    The art of fitting skirting

I seem to find fitting skirting boards one of the most difficult jobs. I've just been doing a bedroom in one of our houses are it's just soooo frustrating. House is 150 years old, brick construction with old crumbly lime mortar. Plaster straight onto brick. Walls are all over the place as...

    Leaking Cistern/Toilet

If the water is getting in between the metal washer and conical washer, then surely putting silicone in the holes at the bottom of the cistern wouldn't actually stop that happening?

    Leaking Cistern/Toilet

Just fitted a new close coupled toilet from q and b. I can stop it leaking from where where the cistern attaches to the pan: I'm getting drips seaping down the thread, I assume it's getting in where the metal nut at the top is against the metal washer. Should I be tighting ALL nuts...

    Demolishing end terrace

We'd like to demolish an 19th century 2 bedroom end terrace(w/cellar) and put in planning for a new detached dwelling on the plot. Was originally planning to extend the current house but after considering the amount of work/money needed to repair it + the extension cost I may as well just do...

    Combined bath tap/shower mixers

How do these combined bath tap/shower mixers compare to stand alone manual shower mixers? apart from the obvious of the hose being attached to the taps.

    Torus, Ogee, Pencil, Chamfered......big yawn

Are these types of skirting the only moulds people know how to sell? I've spent ages looking on the web for a supplier of skirting but all of them (in the UK at least) seem to offer the same old boring designs. Anyone know where I can get a mould like this...

    Re-plaster or dry line?

3 would be cheapest, 1 would be messiest, 2 seems pointless. If the plaster is sound enough just knock off the high bits and get a decent plasterer to level it with bonding and then skim. That's what I'd do. It's amazing how much volume of rubble and dust is created when you knock plaster...

Am I crap? or is it my planer?

I have an Erbauer electric planer. The problem is, if say I'm planing down a door edge, it never produces a straight edge, it's always slanted off to one side as if I were planing an an angle. I've tried over and over again taking care to make sure the planer is totally flat against the...

    No Skirting boards/shadow gap beads

Anyone any experience of shadow gap beads instead of skirting? I understand it's a lot more time consuming as you don't have the luxury of skirting/architrave to cover up.

    Tiling plasterboard in bathroom

Just put up a new stud wall for a shower. It'll be boarded with 9.5mm plasterboard. Before tiling it, is it wise to give it a quick skim coat with multi-finish/board-finish? Just trying to make it a bit more robust as regard water ingress. The rest of the bathroom is simply skimmed...

    Large hex/allen keys - can't find any

I have a shower elbow that requires a fairly large hex key, bit larger than a radiator hex key. I can't can't find anywhere who sells such a thing. Plumb Center, screwfix, tool station, Wickes, B&Q...just don't have anything big enough. Any ideas?
