Dry lining around out of level window

I'm dry lining a wall with timber, the window in the wall is out of level horizontally. When fixing the timber around the window, is it best practice to keep the timber level OR follow the lines of the window so the frame doesn't look odd against the plastered wall? Or, a bit of both to...

Loss of tap pressure on sealed system (Alpha 28c)

I'm currently doing some renovation in the bedroom, it requires removing the rad for a period of time while the work is done. I've had some x400 sludge remover in the CH system for a few months so today I drained down the system (flushing it out by opening the fill valve and letting it drain...

    Repointing old brick wall

We have an old brick wall outside the house. Bricks are probably 150 years plus old, currently pointed with lime. Some of the bricks are very soft. My dad wants to do the repointing and plans to do it with cement. I think this is wrong as it will damage the bricks , every single bit of advice...

I had to repair my external hardwood door frame. Prepped it for painting, sealed round the edges with Geocel All Weather mate which is a paintable sealant 4 days ago. Painted it yesterday with Sandtex gloss, the paint on the wood has dried but the paint that's on the sealant has not and it's...

    Water Meter questions

One of our tenants wants a water meter. She arranged for it to be fitted via yorkshire water, they came as said they couldn't fit one because there wasn't enough room. The supply comes up through the floor directly behind the washing machine and it must be too tight to the wall, or a...

    Alternative to Sodium Chlorate

I have a large site, awaiting building works starting. I've been trying to keep the weeds and grass under control last couple of years. Previously, I used sodium chloride weeder from wilkinsons, it was cheap and did the trick but now I understand it's been banned and the other weedkillers...

    Extending cable, soldering method

I don't like crimps because it's just a personal thing in that I don't think they feel as permanent as a soldered joint. I've had our electrician do them before and I've tried myself(not live) and there always seems to be a tiny tiny little bit of play in the joint. I have done soldered...

Is my bath cast iron or presses steel?

Sorry if this sounds a dumb question but I have an old bath, with square shaped tap holes. I think it was installed in the 70's. I'm looking to buy a fix-a-tap kit and they do a version for cast iron baths and pressed steel baths. How do I tell which mine is?

    Extending cable, soldering method

I need to cut into some 2.5mm cable to extend it. I'm not a big fan of crimp joints and would prefer to solder. Regarding insulting the joints, is shrink wrap the only way to go as opposed to insulation tape?

Paint cracking on internal side of exterior door

I fitted a brand new hardwood door few months ago, had 2 coats of sadolin wood wood protector and then a couple of top coats of extra. The inside was primed and then painted with Dulux diamond satinwood (water based). Problem is, as the weather is changing there's massive cracks appearing...

    Leaking basin tap

What exactly is the grub screw supposed to tighten/untighten?

    Leaking basin tap

I removed the handle, tightened the grub screw inside as tight as I possibly could and it's still leaking. Also, tried removing the grub screw to see if the top of the tap would come off but it won't. I've now tightened up the grub screw so much that I can't undo it.

    American style PEX pipe joins

Dunno if any of you watch the US tv show Holmes on Homes on Discovery shed? I do and noticed that when they use plastic barrier pipe for internal plumbing, the joints they use are different to the bulky Hep2o and Speedfit style elbow's we use. Pic here...

Bricking up fireplace in a terrace

Doing a renovation, fireplace as a very old gas fire. Chimney backs onto next door. It's for rental and as the property has central heating we usually install electric fires to save on yearly gas servicing costs. If I brick up the opening, dry line the entire chimney with battens and...
