    Unexplained Pipes

I admit this may well be a diagram for the sake of a diagram but there is not much to explain really. All I can see is that the tops of the blue pipes are not connected to anything and the pipes then run down my wall and go into my floor so I can't see what if anything they are attached to...

    Unexplained Pipes

Hoping somebody can help me out with this. YOu must forgive me for posting on a similar vein earlier but I think I phrased my question rather poorly. I am pretty sure that I have a sealed central heating system that needs to run at 1 bar and is powered by a combination boiler. There are...

    Strange tubes

I am a bit concerned about blowing down the pipes as if they are connected am I not going to end up with a mouthful of something horrible? I have drawn a diagram of the set up in the room. The blue pipes on the right are not connected to anything at the top, however I am unable to see if they...

    Strange tubes

There are two pipes adn I can only see the ends of these two which are at the top of the flat. Can't see what is on the other ends which go into the floor of by downstairs living room. Is there ever a situation where if one end is unattached the other end might still be attached to something...

    Strange tubes

I have discovered two cables that run up the inside of a cupboard in my flat. They have written on them...... ABPWHT75 AQUA B PEX MM BS8291 G 20/05/99 (5) I had thought these were elextricity cables but now think that they are something to do with plumbing. The strange thing is that I can...

    Maybe a silly question

Any idea whether it is directly proportionate. For example if you had two exact same radiators with same length of pipe to each. If they are both on do you use twice as much gas as if you have just one on.

    Where to locate thermostat

My thermostat is currently located about 50 cm above and slightly to the left of a radiator. I think this has effectively turned it into a readiator temperature monitoring device. To get the whole room to heat up to a comfortable level we often have to turn it up to 27 degrees and once that...

    Maybe a silly question

Just wondering if turning some (not all) radiators down or off actually reduces the amount of gas being burnt? For example, my bathroom is extremely cold and I would like to leave the heating on to that bathroom for the majority of the day. However, the rest of house is fine at the moment and...

    Radiator valves

I moved into my house relatively recently and just noticed that none of my radiators have plastic covers on the valves. I know that there should be one lockshield valve and one that turns so that you can turn off the radiator. I am going to buy some plastic caps but am not sure which cap...

    damp in bathroom

I have a cupboard in my bathroom that is built on an externally facing wall. The wall is as far as i can see just bare plaster and is not sealed or painted. Condensation is accumulating on this wall and going into the plaster and then rising up the wall so that above this cupboard a damp patch...

My living room AV install. Work in progress with pics.

You seem to have a similar sized room to me. I was wondering how much you paid for the plastering work.

Is lilac a danger to my building

A lilac plant is growing next to my building. It is not growing at the foundations but is growing in the steps that lead up to our neighbour's house. Consequently, it is growing adjacent to our wall and is about 2 metres above the foundations. The plant is only about 1m high but has been cut...

    Washer Drier causing damp problem

I have a Hotpoint WD 860 in my bathroom and before you ask it is outside Zone 3 and protected by a RCD and a FCU that is outside the bathroom. It is housed in a cupboard made of MDF and one of the sides of this cupboard is the external wall. This wall has a damp patch on it directly...

    Could shed be causing damp

I have been presented with an alternative hypothesis. In the bathroom there is a cupboard within whcih my washer dryer is kept. Before you ask. This is outside Zone 3 and is protected by an RCD and meets Part P regulations etc. The cupboard is made of MDF. The MDF is bone dry but the bit...

    Could shed be causing damp

I'm not that confused! The shed slopes towards the wall.

Seeled or open central heating system

The pressure in my boiler says it is close to zero. However there is a red dial which the manual says represents where the pressure should be. My dilemma is that I also know that the pressure should be zero if it is an open system, and I should therefore not be increasing the pressure...

    Could shed be causing damp

I have moved into my flat 6 months ago and have noticed a damp patch slowly getting worse in my bathroom. The bathroom has 9" solid brick external walls and the damp patch is on a wall that the next door neighbours have a shed next to. The shed has a sloping roof with no gutter and is positioned...

How do you leave the electrics when you go on holiday

When going on holiday my mum always used to unplug all the electric applicances and lights, make sure all the switches were in the off position and got my dad to unplug all the fuses at the consumer unit. We used to laugh a lot at this behaviour as being a little over the top. However, I...

Long delay between pressing switch and light coming on

I am an idiot. The lightbulb is energy saving. Sorry for wasting your time. Having found some wierdness in the house electrics before I am a little jumpy about everything.

Long delay between pressing switch and light coming on

There are two lights in our communal hallway. These are standard lightbulbs and are not halogens fed by a transformer. One is fed from the electricity in my flat the other from the electricity supply in the other flat. There is a two way switch next to each of the flat's doors. One...
