Reinstating a fireplace (NOW with a picture!)

Here is a photo up the Chimney. You'll notice as the chimney narrows there is cement missing from the bricks. The top of the chimney (in the photo) goes through a 90 degree-ish bend. Click on image to see bigger image:

Reinstating a fireplace (NOW with a picture!)

I've had a quick look up the chimney, it narrows as it rises from the fireplace, it appears the 'shoulders' have lost some of their cement. The rest of the chimney appears never to have had any lining, just brick. I'll call the sweep tomorrow and see that he has to say. Thanks for you...

Reinstating a fireplace (NOW with a picture!)

I've just reopened my fireplace in my living room (house is 70 years old). A quick look up the chimney shows lots of soot and loose bits of mortar sat on the 'throat' of the chimney. I intend to get it swept before I reinstate a coal/wood grate But I am concerned that there should be any...

Tiling onto a Bitumen coated floor

I have a concrete floor with a bitumen coating. I've read that Bitumen isn't a good surface for adhesives to adhere to. Is this true, or can I use regular tile adhesives? Any advice welcomed.

    Donwstairs toilet layout

This is a photo of a friend's loo they've just done out. It has very similar dimensions to yours and has the door opening out into the corridor. There is no natural ventilation hence the extractor fan. Excuse the curvy photo, it was taken in several shots and then combined into one with...

    Old iron water main!

Yorkshire Water have found the stopcock to the old Iron water main. :D It had been covered over with 2" of Tarmac! The tap has broken so the road will need to be dug up and the main capped. The YW guy said he could hear water rushing through the old main, so no doubt it's leaking in several...

    Old iron water main!

Thanks for the advice guys. Yorkshire Water are coming Thursday morning to look at it, I'll keep you posted. Let's see if they can be as 'helpful' as when I stuck my spade through my actual water main last year (buried only 200mm under the ground! This is how I know my water is fed via...

    Old iron water main!

I've been digging new drains and have come across an old iron/steel water main, approximately 1" diameter. It has a pin hole leak and is spurting water to about 1 metre in height. I've managed to bandage it with an old rubber innertube and a jubilee clip, this has significantly reduced the...

    Light pipes?

After my extension is complete there will be no windows on the landing, making it rather dark unless a bedroom door is left open. So, I was wondering about installing a light pipe such as this: http://www.solaskylights.com Anyone had experience of fitting and their effectiveness? Thanks.

    Tiling on a bitumen floor

My kitchen floor is coated in bitumen. I've been told that tile adhesive does not stick very well to this (is this true?) on top of it? Thanks.

Dry-lining or traditional plastering, Which is cheapest?

I've been helping a local builder for the past few months with a 4 bed detached house he's building, basically to improve my skills. I've been bricklaying, jointing, carpentry, plastering. The results are good, I can't tell the difference between his work and mine, He'd have 'sacked' me...

Dry-lining or traditional plastering, Which is cheapest?

I'm soon to start building an extension. I'll be doing the plastering myself. Just wondering what is cheapest in the long run: Dot & Dab + skim, or Traditional Browning + skim? I've approx 75 m^2 to cover, ignoring labour costs for both. Thanks

    Chicken or egg?

For the sake of the electrian, it's a LOT easier to wire when you have full access to the joists, ie not boarded. Else he'll be upstairs downstairs cursing you.

    Plastering

No offense is implied to your beloved but your comments remind me of an episode of "Escape to the Country". The said family were being shown round a grade 2 listed Geogian house. They said they'd rip out the original fireplace and put a bar in its place. The original oak staircase would be...
