    Part P installation quotes

Thanks, at least I now have an idea of things to talk to the electricians about to get an idea of what is/isn't being done! The CU was new in 1999, so I don't know whether RCD's could be fitted to it. The extractors have pull cords, but I guess they need an additional isolator switch...

    Part P installation quotes

Hi, I'm currently getting quotes for wiring my new extension and the prices (I've only had two so far) are miles apart! One was for £800 all in, the other was for £1400. Before I get any more or ask questions, can you please advise me what I need to be specifically looking for from them...

    Slabs for driveway edgings?

I want to use 12" (approx. 35mm thick)square slabs to edge my drive rather than the usual block pavers, before it is tarmaced. The drive is currently between 8-10" of compacted mill-waste. If I bed the slabs on a mortar base, will they withstand the weight of a car passing over them? If so...

    Shower tray installation?

Thanks. If I dig a channel into the concrete floor, it will obviously pass through the DPM membrane under the floor as it passes through the walls to the outside drain. Won't that cause problems?

    Shower tray installation?

I'm going to install a shower in my new bathroom. This is downstairs & has a concrete floor (tiles on top). The shower trays I've looked at would need a recess in the floor to accomodate the waste trap if the shower were laid straight onto the floor (not clever) or the tray mounting on some...

Floor tile preparation with PVA, mix ratio?

I've read the sticky, but can't find an answer. I'm laying Wickes floor tiles onto a new concrete floor. I always thought you should PVA the floor first, question is what mix for watering down the PVA & do I let it dry completely, or just start to go tacky? Thanks

    Drain pipe identification/routing?

Thanks. I have had a camera down & the problem is that there is a 90 degree bend in the road & NO fall on the pipes there! Also, as the main sewer is around 60 feet from my house its my responsibility. Installing an inspection chamber won't solve the problem, but trying to rod round that...

    Drain pipe identification/routing?

I need to install a new inspection chamber in my drive. We keep getting blockages out in the road & it takes me two complete sets of rods to reach it from the present chamber. If I install one at the end of the drive it will be a whole lot easier to rod through. The problem is, where on...

    New floor tile/skirting question

Yes, I'm tiling the walls, BUT the water pipes run round 2 of the walls behind where the skirting would be, hence "hiding" them with 5" skirting, otherwise I'd have just tiled straight from floor to ceiling.

    Drain rod question

Unfortunately the bend is in the run from my house to the start of the sewer. The picture below shows my house (the one with the caravan & red car). The start of the sewer is the red triangle. Severn Trent will not touch anything before the main sewer.

    Drain rod question

I've seen the locking rods & to be honest should have bought them in the first place. A rodding eye would be great but the 90 degree bend is out in the road.

    New floor tile/skirting question

In a new extension, I'm going to tile the floor. Should I tile first (up to the walls) & then fit skirting board after (so the base of the skirting sits on top of the tile) or should I fit the skirtings first & then tile up to the skirting? This is in a bathroom. Thanks

    Drain rod question

I have a problem with the drains from the house to the public sewer. The run is about 18 metres, then a right hand 90 deg bend (!!!!) and a further 6 metres to the sewer. The run has no fall after the first 10 metres... No surprises then that they keep getting blocked, just after the 90...

    DIY electrics in extension?

Okay, I've just fetched the plans & the Electrical part of the construction Notes states: All electrical work required to meet the Approved Document Part P and must be designed, installed and tested by a person competent to do so. Prior to completion the Council should be satisfied that...

    DIY electrics in extension?

In the construction notes I simply stated that "all electrical installation to comply to part P of building regs & conform to BS**** (can't remember exact details, plans are downstairs).

    SPRAYING CAR BONNET WITH CANS

Don't expect to get the same "fresh from the factory" finish with an aerosol can. They CAN be used to achieve satisfactory results on older cars, but be aware that car manufacturers actually use many different shades for the same colour. Vauxhall used to use a blue called China Blue, this had...

    window in extension

There is a minimum return/pier size of approx. 670mm, so you'd have to fit a smaller window.

    DIY electrics in extension?

Honest opinions? Although I'm not an electrician by trade, I'm design manager for a company that produces LV and MV cable accessories & jointing systems, so while I'm fully aware of what goes off up to the CU, from there inwards I have no qualifications. I've helped a friend with three...

    Energy efficient light fittings?

BCO has told me I need to use energy efficient light fittings throughout my new extension. WTF are they? I'm aware of the energy saving bulbs, but she said that they must not be able to accept the "standard" bayonet bulbs. I've done a quick search & found nothing so thought I'd ask here first.

    Tanking, aqua panel & skimming.

Thanks, I'm going with the Aqua panel as it comes in 12.5mm thick, the same as the plasterboard I'm using. My blockwork walls are good so hopefully I should be able to get both Aquapanel & plasterboard to butt up against each other flush. I'll dot & dab the PB as usual & do the same for the...
