Causes of damp in converted garage

The earth is the full height of the room. The floor above goes further back on top of the earth. I've tried to show this below. There is no chance of digging out without knocking down most of the house. I noticed last night that the dampish wall is a stud wall if that makes any difference. I...

Causes of damp in converted garage

I suspect I won't like the answer to this but here goes: We have recently bought a house where an integral garage has been converted to a bedroom. The house is built into a hill such that the rear wall of this room has earth/rock behind it. The wall feels very slightly damp and there is...

Earth bonding - is this right?

Thanks. That's useful to know. Looks like a broken shower is going to be a very expensive thing.

Earth bonding - is this right?

I called an electrician in yesterday to quote to replace the cabling running to an electric shower. When he arrived he did a lot of sucking through teeth and told me that he couldn't do the work until all the earth bonding was right. This included the bonding to the stop cock and the gas meter...

Possible causes of electric shower not being hot

Sorry, should have been more explicit. I have a "volt stick" that glows when it's near ac. I used it to check the cable coming from the circuit breaker, the pull switch on the ceiling and the terminals on the shower. It confirmed that ac at at least some voltage level is present. I don't...

Possible causes of electric shower not being hot

I have a Gainsborough 9.5kW SDL electric shower, which no longer produces hot water. The manual says the causes might be too much flow or no power getting to the shower. It can't be the flow since it's a trickle on the highest setting (and quite powerful on the lowest). I know there's ac at...

    Tumble drier water supply?

    Tumble dryer plumbing?

This is possibly a silly question, but does a tumble dryer need a water supply? I understand that there are condensing and vented types. I plan to get a condensing one. A friend suggested that this might need a cold water supply to do the condensing. Is this the case? Thanks.

    Disconneting a sink - T-piece capping

Thanks. Is there a chance this could cause a dead end though, allowing the water collected there to stagnate?

    Help with light bulb identification/replacement

Diyisfun: Thanks, I'll do that anyway, but I haven't seen one before, so I wanted to check. RF Lighting: No, it looks more like a normal bulb. I think it's one of these: http://tinyurl.com/htwnu (you'll need to select "globe" in the "colour" drop down box to see the right one).

    Disconneting a sink - T-piece capping

I want to remove a wash-basin in a room adjacent to the bathroom. On inspection, it turns out that the hot and cold are fed from the supplies going to the bathroom sink. They branch off using T-pieces and there is an isolation valve on each . Diagram below (hopefully it makes sense). All of this...

    Help with light bulb identification/replacement

I've just moved house and one of the semi-recessed lights in the kitchen has blown. The bulb is from Ikea and is an energy efficient type. It looks like something on the site described as E27, which appears to be a fitting type so far as I can see on the net. The holder for it has a...

Boilers in bedrooms - good idea?

Can't remember offhand the make and model. However, it vents (if that's the right word) through the wall to the outside. Looking through the manual, it states that there is no need for an air vent to the cupboard it's housed in (although it has one anyway).

Boilers in bedrooms - good idea?

Having just moved in and it being warm, I don't have any idea how loud it is, but will certainly check that out. Thanks very much for all the advice/thoughts.

Boilers in bedrooms - good idea?

We've just moved into a new house and there is a combi boiler in one of the bedrooms. All well and good, but the room is the one we'd earmarked for a nursery. So my question is: should it be fine so long as it's serviced and we have a CO alarm, or should we (somehow) get it moved? Thanks

    Showerhead for electric shower

The showerhead on my Triton Jade has deteriorated to the point that most of the water pours out instead of spraying. I want to replace it, but the last time I tried that I think I ruptured the PRD by fitting a head with a "pulse" mode. The proper spare is quite pricey, so what should I...
