    Humming noise from chimney

Quick update: I had an aerial man round on Monday who swapped the aerial for one where the small rods are not connected to the horizontal bar using small plastic clips - but more like the old fashioned type where it is a metal to metal connection. After he removed the old aerial, I can now see...

    Humming noise from chimney

I have an aerial guy coming round to look at it (my aerial, not ballsacre's....) on Monday. Will talk to him about adding a new bracket as well and see what he thinks.

    Humming noise from chimney

I have not resolved it yet. I have now noticed it occurring during the day time too, and when the fire was out was able to get my head inside the woodburner. After getting closer, I can hear the sound within the chimney itself. I spoke to a chimney specialist and they said in their...

    Humming noise from chimney

Thanks, I will give that a try No cowl on the chimney. Agree it sounds like an extractor fan, or a transformer, but I have turned off the power to the entire house and it still persists, so we can rule that out.

    Humming noise from chimney

For the past 2 weeks, there has been an intermittent buzzing/humming noise which seems to be coming from my chimney. The chimney runs from a woodburner in my living room and passes through my bedroom (pic below). I have only noticed the noise at night. The fire is generally lit from about...

    Bandsaw circuit breaker requirements

I have just bought a used bandsaw which needs a 16A supply - the guy who owned it before me had a dedicated 16A connection for it. I have a 32 amp supply running from my house consumer unit to my garage, where the saw will be used. In the garage there is a separate consumer unit with B32 and...

    Retro-fit ball valves

I need to fit some isolation valves to some existing copper pipes. I would prefer to use ball valves with handles to make isolation easier. I have done a similar job before, cutting out a section of pipe and then using force to open the hole a bit wider, squeezing the new valve into the...

    Water pipe insulation

Thanks for the tip. I've wrapped them in loft insulation now, so hopefully that will do the trick.

    Water pipe insulation

Hi, My bathroom hot & cold water pipes and central heating pipes run through a loft area of my house. Last year the central heating pipes froze in the cold, so I added radiator anti-freeze and that has been OK since. This year, the water pipes are frozen..... The problem is that the...

    Iona Oil Boiler: Burner Lockout

My earlier post ref multimeter results was wrong, I just re-did the test. Immediately after lockout, the multimeter is just showing "1" (off the scale I guess) - then after a minute or so it comes back onto the scale and quickly drops back to the 2.4k. Does this indicate it is the coil...

    Iona Oil Boiler: Burner Lockout

The pump is a Danfoss BFP11 R3. The burner is a TRIANCO 550104/21 MINOR 4TC EUROSTAR 100/125. I undid the flexipipe and the oil flow to the fuel pump seems fine.

    Iona Oil Boiler: Burner Lockout

Thanks Mandate. I read another post (http://www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=229348) that said I can diagnose if it is the coil by using a muiltimeter across the two parallel pins behind the plug in the coil. Cold, it reads 2.1k, after firing up and the burner lockout coming on it...

    Iona Oil Boiler: Burner Lockout

Quick update: I have cleaned the photo-resister and the filter at the oil tank, but that made no difference. A bit more detail on when lockout light comes on : 1. I can hear the burner burning OK. 2. The noise changes - it sounds like the burner stops burning, but air is still being...

    Iona Oil Boiler: Burner Lockout

Hi, I have an Iona oil fired boiler, which I think was fitted approx 5 years ago. I have been in this house 9 months, so I am not sure when/if it was serviced last. It has been working OK since I have lived here, but the burner lockout light has started turning on. When the boiler...

    Overhead cable voltage

Hi, I am wanting to put up an electric fence in a field which has overhead power cables running over it. I therefore need to know the voltage being carried in the overhead cables, so I can work out the clearance to the elec fence. Does anyone know what the voltage is carried in overhead...

Elec usage for oil fired central heating

Hello, Just moved to a new house with oil fired central heating. Got a shocking electricity bill for the 1st month of living here, so got a gadget that shows electricity usage to find the culprit. When the (oil burning) central heating starts burning, the gadget is showing 200-300W jump...
