Spur socket - tee into existing wiring

Yeah fair enough. I suppose for me it’s accessible as I know it’s there, to someone who eventually inherits the house, it would not be obvious at all.

Spur socket - tee into existing wiring

Thanks all. Good to know this is considered acceptable practise as it will be much easier than taking a wire from one of the other sockets. Isn’t lifting carpets and screws to the floorboard piece considered accessible? I’d consider plastered in a wall not accessible - or am I opening a can of...

Spur socket - tee into existing wiring

I need to put a new socket in the middle of my room wall, basically directly in the middle of two existing sockets on either end of one wall. I’ve had the floor boards up and the wire connecting both existing sockets runs right underneath where I need the new one. Are you allowed to tee into...

What beast is excavating under my patio?

As above, if you see a rat in the daytime this likely means the nest is overcrowded - they normally only come out at night. If you have a rough idea where they are, get the poison that are small bags, if you’re lucky they’ll drag it back to the nest.

    Leaking towel radiator valve

Well this made my journey to work a lot more bearable this morning picturing this - probably found it more funny than I should have  Hope the water didn’t damage anything , but why did you think it wouldn’t be OK to remove the entire valve without a flood! o_O

    Blocking up fireplace

Thanks for the replies, chimney cowl is actually already in place which is lucky. Good shout on the moisture being sucked out the skim, is not thought of that. Any serious concerns on going with Gyproc?

    Blocking up fireplace

Morning all - I’m going to be removing my gas fireplace and blocking up the hole soon. Once I’ve got a GSE to cap the pipe, just wanted to check opinions on my method after some research. I want to block the hole up with thermalite blocks - my main question is, would you bother leaving a gap to...

    Nest thermostat

Are you sure you mean the heat link? Or the USB plug? The USB plug isn’t the heat link - that’s the square thing which should be right next to your boiler wired into it. It’s from there where the 12v supply can be taken to the thermostat. If that’s indeed what he’s done, as you say, then what’s...

    Nest thermostat

So where are the wires connected at the other end? As in, the ones carrying 17v, where is that coming from - the boiler? I’m assuming it’s not connected to the heat link, if it is then it’s probably faulty.

    Nest thermostat

The Nest needs 12v, not 230v - there’s a big warning label around it when you take it out the box. If he’s only just realised the voltage is too high then he’s created you a nice paper weight

    Conservatory rad

Our previous house had a large radiator connected to the main central heating (as others have said this isn’t allowed really but loads do it and it was in before we moved in). My experience of that was it was a waste of time, impossible to balance conservatory with rest of house and when the...

    Powermax 155x & Hive

No needn’t to get sarcy :) the manual recommends that you set the hot water to ‘all day’ which isn’t constant. As I say I don’t see why this would be different if you’ve installed a Nest, Hive or one of those Honeywell mechanical things, if you’ve just replaced the thermostat side the hot water...

    Powermax 155x & Hive

I am certain this is not the case - I am sure of this because this is not set to constantly on with the set-up I did with Nest and is working fine now, and the hot water can be timed exactly the same as before. If you just replace the thermostat wires then it could be any thermostat connecting...

    Powermax 155x & Hive

Did I?! Hah. I think you put ‘hw’ instead of heating, but as long as someone agrees I’m not talking out of my foot :-)

    Powermax 155x & Hive

Not quite, on this boiler the heating won’t start circulating if the store isn’t up to temperature, when the heating comes on the first action is to bring the store up to temp and then it will start circulating to the rads. Heating isn’t reliant on having hot water set to ‘on’ beforehand -...

    Hive/Nest Powermax 155x

No worries - I’d say the Hive is just a thermostat that you can operate whilst you’re not at home, not really a ‘smart’ thermostat like the Nest, hence the price difference IMO. I had Hive and soon switched to Nest after a week - each to their own though :-)

    Hive/Nest Powermax 155x

I got a Nest to my brothers 155x this time last year - see post here where I got clarification around the lack of neutral from the thermostat: https://www.diynot.com/diy/threads/replacing-thermostat-with-nest-no-neutral.493963/ As others have said, it’s my easier just to replace the heating...
