To cove or not to cove...

The modern fashion is not to have coving. I suspect we were all convinced that it it looks better without coving by modern builders who want to cut costs. Anyway, I'm willing to bet that in 20 years time, people will be retrofitting coving in order make their houses more upmarket. Just my...

    Car tyres

I was recently involved in some user testing of Continental cross climate vs their summer tyres. It was widely acknowledged that due to the nature of the construction of cross climates, they will always be noisier than most summer tyres.

3 port valve motor scalding hot

I've just observed that after no call for HW and CH for hours and with all the attached pipework now cooled down, the motor in the 3 port valve is scalding hot. Plainly it's being energised but I'd have thought it shouldn't be under these circumstances. Is my reasoning correct or is right that...

    Dealing with mismatched bricks

Our two story house is rendered from chest height up to roof level, leaving exposed brickwork from chest height down to ground level. The side of the house used to have 3 doorways into a lean-to conservatory but this was removed prior to our ownership and the doorways bricked up (with rendering...

    Vaillant Hot Water Short Cycling

I have this exact same problem and have been chasing it for a year now. After 20 minutes or so of heating HW, the boiler temp will overshoot 75 and switch off, leaving the pump running. Boiler temp will drop and after a few minutes it will fire up again and overshoot 75 again well within 2...

    Morbid obese people

Can we get started on smokers too? My wife is currently on life support in hospital and I see loads of people in their hospital PJs dragging their drip or catheter outside so they can fill their lungs full of poison. Ungrateful tw@ts. The NHS tries to help them and they try and undo all that...

    Removing trim from UPVC Windows

When we had some windows replaced last year, the fitters installed some UPVC trim around the inner window to cover over gaps between the reveals and the windows and the cill and the windows. I now want to rework the reveals and cills to get rid of the ugly trim but upon removing it, it seems to...

    Fixing cavity closers to lintels

What's a suitable way of fitting 2nd fix cavity closers to lintels? I'll need to plaster board over them so need it to be strong. Is grab adhesive good enough? I can't see how you'd mechanically fix anything into these concrete lintels. Many thanks.

Dimmer for 2 way led lighting

Thank you all for your valuable input. It's a big landing coupled to a corridor and yes, I may have overdone it on the number of lights. It's hard to find any meaningful (dare I use that word these days?) guidance on the layout and spacing of lights for anything other than kitchens, bathrooms...

Dimmer for 2 way led lighting

I'm after some advice please. We've just fitted 8 Enlite E5s on our landing, controllerd by 2 way switching. To be honest, they are too bright so I'm looking to fit a dimmer in place of the downstairs rocker but I'm a bit lost as to what I need. I imagined (hoped) I could just buy a trailing...

The importance of a FENSA certificate

Just get building control in to inspect the installation and sign it off. Won't cost much and saves a ball ache when you come to sell.

    Hot water short cycling boiler

I have a similar problem on a vented system. I have observed that the boiler flow temperature hits the boiler temp (75 degrees), the boiler modulates back and the 75 is more or less maintained (cylinder temp is set at 65). But quite often the boiler flow temp will overshoot 75 quite rapidly and...

extension 300mm bigger than the paln

This happened at our previous property. We never had an issue with the plannng people but when we came to sell, the surveyor picked it up and put the whole sale in jeopardy for a while.

    Adjusting UPVC door

Hi folks. Can anyone tell me what specific kind of hinge is and how to adjust it please? The whole door needs to be raised a few mm relative to the frame and the top of the door needs to tip inwards towards the frame. Many thanks.

28mm flooring for 1/4 stair landing

Just ripped up our stair carpet and found the 1/4 landing flooring is a right bodge which explains why it squeaks so badly. It's 28mm and I cannot find anyone who sells 28mm treads/nosing with t&g or anyone who sells 28mm t&g structural flooring sheet. Can anyone point me in the right direction...

    Masonry fixings advice

Can I ask some advice please? I need to attach some 50mm weight bearing (i.e. human weight) battens to a brick wall. What is the consensus of opinion? Hammer fixings or concrete screws? Many thanks.

System Boiler pump runs but no burner

Same results with the CH schedule although it took much longer to reach the 78 (might be 77) that it decided to shutdown upon reaching rather than modulating back (it did modulate for a while around 75 before finally overshooting to 77/78 and shutting down to S7).
