Drain problems/rats with no consistent advice

Not sure if this is what you mean but here is a basic diagram of the drainage we have. There is a soil stack inside the house - inaccessible as it's boxed in behind false walls in an upstairs bathroom and the utility room. It vents via the roof. Connected to it are two bathrooms upstairs...

Drain problems/rats with no consistent advice

Thanks. The soil stack is vented through the roof-weve got this thing with fake tiles so it looks like part of the roof.

Drain problems/rats with no consistent advice

Hi all. Ive got a 1930s house but most of the drains are new due to work we've done over the last few years. We occasionally get drain smells in the utility room and some of the bathrooms. The drains used to block up quite regularly- 2 or 3 times a year. The blockages seem to have stopped now...

    Contact paper on plywood?

Thanks for the detailed response. I agree on the lipping and staining as a better option: we've done this a few times before and every time I've done it with oak/walnut veneered mdf with solid lipping, and that has been fine (read: wife was happy). This time I've 5 sheets of good quality plywood...

    Contact paper on plywood?

Hi all. I am building a closet with hardwood ply. I had intended to sand and finish the ply with osmo oil and leave it at that because it's quite attractive stuff, but my wife has overruled me and wants an oak-like finish, using contact paper. Seems sensible enough, but any advice on whether it...

Wall mounting for a monitor - vertical slide?

Thanks all! That last one is the sort of thing I had in mind- I've got a 28 inch monitor though not a massive telly, so not sure it would fit - but 800mm of travel is about what I'll need. I'll keep looking. The other thing I could do of course is brace the desk so it doesn't wobble so much.

Wall mounting for a monitor - vertical slide?

I have a standing desk. It's decent and I like it, but it is not office-quality and so wobbles a bit from side to side when its in standing position. Which makes the monitor wobble about a bit which in turn makes me feel seasick occasionally. I'd like to wall-mount my monitor so it stays...

    Fire doors again

Thanks both. Yes, I was going to edit the original post to say "is there anything (other than common sense) stopping me fitting any old fire door...". But honestly- that door never gets closed. Never. And a fire door that is left open is surely useless anyway. We'd actually quite like to widen...

    Fire doors again

Hi all We are about to have the builders in to mess about with the downstairs layout of the house which involves replacing all of the doors and the door stops. We will likely do the loft in the next few years so even though the drawings dont show it, the builder suggests we fit fire doors now...

    Buzzing valve on water tank

Thanks. I've finished the kids baths now and we had hot water, so seemingly all is well. Thanks to everyone for the guidance: I was looking for a diagnosis rather than how to DIY the fix, but it's great that people are willing to talk me through it. The point about cutting off the spades on the...

    Buzzing valve on water tank

Cheers. I got the screwfix one and installed it. I'm not really sure how to tell whether it is working properly. If my shower is cold in the morning then I guess it isn't! All I could think to do to test it was to turn off the hot water on the wall box and test the resistance on the little lever...

    Buzzing valve on water tank

Also - I left it locked open so we have hot water, rather than rely on immersion (although it still makes a really loud buzzing sound). Good idea? Bad idea? doesn't matter? Thanks!

    Buzzing valve on water tank

Thanks both! I took off the cover. I needed gloves, it's very hot! Here is the motor. I'd never heard of a synchron motor until today. I am no expert but the specs I can see are 50hz; 5W and 4RPM. I have no idea how important it is to match exactly. I've had a quick look at where I...

    Buzzing valve on water tank

Good to know, thanks Chris. We've had a fair bit of trouble with them and the other plumbers who looked at them were pretty critical (if this one needs replacing that is 50% of them within 5 years, and we've had a few other issues too). But I have no insight beyond that - I may just have been...

    Buzzing valve on water tank

Thanks all. Here is the valve itself. It was installed when the central heating was installed, about 5 years ago. There are 4 of them (hot water, and the three zones on the heating system). One of them has already been replaced - the plumber who did that was pretty critical of the original...

    Buzzing valve on water tank

Hi all The valve on the pipework to my water tank is hot and making a buzzing noise. Is there anything I can do to stop it - I assume that it is a problem. If not - can it wait, or do I need to get a plumber out asap? I've taken a quick video, here: Any advice gratefully received! Thanks
