Advice on new front garden wall

Thanks again for the reply Woody, I'm happy with the depth that they're at but not with how short he was on concrete. I've measured today and we're 225mm on one end and 295mm on the other lower than the pavement. This means he won't be able to go the entire length in concrete blocks as you'll...

DIY playhouse finishing roof and window details

Thanks, Following on from both of your suggestions I'm going to set the saw up and extend the roof rafters back to horizontal with a filler piece which I'll glue and screw. I'm thinking of 100mm fascia capping the OSB and kicking up the end of the tiles slightly. I can then hopefully scallop...

DIY playhouse finishing roof and window details

Thanks for the reply Blup, Good point about the strip. So shall I just build the gable ends up in the usual fashion and box them in with soffit? I'm unsure whether to do it in wood or plastic, don't know whether uPVC will spoil the look. Hmm. I hastily cut the rafter ends after one of them...

DIY playhouse finishing roof and window details

Hello, I've been building a playhouse for the kids for a couple of weeks now and have taken a design as you go approach so far but it seems as though I've come unstuck with some details that need doing ASAP, it's my little girls birthday in a month and I'd like it finished by then. I've built...

Advice on new front garden wall

Thanks for the reply, I wasn't thinking of a cavity just if the two skins are tied together in any way. There are going to be three, two brick pillars spaced at the start, middle and end of the wall, which will be recessed back so that the pillars are flush with the front of the road standing...

Advice on new front garden wall

Thanks, Would they be frost proof enough though? I'm happy to go with them if that's the case. We ended up 300mm below ground level so it looks like that's the case. Concrete level finished at 350mm. Will the double wall skins be tied together with normal ties? And how do they join onto the...

Advice on new front garden wall

Thanks for the reply John, I spoke to him this morning and we agreed that we'd cut the posts off flush after some discussion. We've also made the trench deeper but he didn't think we'd have enough ballast to take us up to the 150mm below mark. We're currently 300mm below with concrete still...

Advice on new front garden wall

Thanks for the reply Woody, I'm struggling to sleep as this is on my mind. I'm not sure I understand, from what I've read the footings need to 150mm below for frost protection and he mentioned two or three courses below ground level which would make the concrete depth only 300mm wouldn't it...

Advice on new front garden wall

Update, The builder has came today and dug down to 500mm by 450mm wide. He mentioned having three courses below ground level which would make the footings about 280mm to 300mm. We're about 150mm into the red clay. Does this sound right? Are 300mm footings deep enough? Thanks.

Advice on new front garden wall

Thanks for the reply Woody, You're right I have a tendency to overthink and over engineer. I've been looking at tree root barriers all morning! would it be worth putting some geotextile material in the footings near the tree just in case? From what I've read it's late summer that any problems...

Advice on new front garden wall

Just dug a test pit near the tree, no major roots in the bit that I excavated. The footing will end up being 500mm from the trunk which is about 150mm diameter. At around a foot down it's red clay, will this affect anything? Do we need anti heave footings this close to the tree? Thanks

Advice on new front garden wall

Hello, We're looking into having a new wall built to the front of the property and have had two quotes so far but I had a few questions I wanted to ask before we went ahead. The wall will be 8m long double skin at about 1.1m finished height with blues on edge, supported by three 1.6m pillars...

Advice on finishing new shallow pitch roof

Hello again, yeah I said that on the phone. 3.50 seemed quite reasonable yesterday as I was doing the job straight away but I did look at the same ones on ebay for the lower price. Yes these seem like the the ones youre talking about, the only thing I was concerned about was the angle that...

Advice on finishing new shallow pitch roof

Good morning all and thanks for the replies, I am once again worried! Went to jewsons yesterday but they wanted 8 quid per one! And they weren't in stock! Got them from our local roofing store at 3.50 plus the vat for a 2.5m length which didn't seem too bad. Anyway, got back and removed...

Advice on finishing new shallow pitch roof

Hello again, no no im at work at present however it seems a nice day out there! The building trestles have now been replaced for something more substantial! From what I've researched that solution seems to be the best way forward. The second batten that I've shown is thinner than the first...

Advice on finishing new shallow pitch roof

Thanks again for the reply. I typed mendip initially as that was what we were using until we realised how low the pitch was on the side of the extension. He was supposed to be starting the work today however this seems to be the debate of the month as we both have conflicting ideas and so...

Advice on finishing new shallow pitch roof

Thanks oldbutnotdead for the reply, sorry they're Redland regent tiles, we were going to use mendips but they only went down to 15 degrees where as the regents go down to 12.5 degrees. We've both been scowling the internet but we have been doing other parts of the extension whilst waiting...
