    Wood lighting back box

I've just moved to a new house and wanted to change the 1930's style switches with nice metal ones. I was expecting a nicely earthed back box for me to earth my new switch to, but no, the back box is made of wood and there is no earth wire in sight. What should I do?

Upgrading central heating / hot water - what's worth doing?

We've just moved into a new house (4 bed, 1 bath, 1 shower) and were considering replacing / upgrading the heating & hot water before we start decorating. We currently have a Potterton Profile boiler approx 10 years old, and a well insulated tank which is in good condition and has an...

    Replacing rusty spark plugs

So the saga continues.... Soaked the plugs in wd40 overnight. Woke up this morning trying to remove them, but they won't budge with my spark plug spanner. Not being within pushing distance of a garage and not wanting to tempt fate, I cleaned the wd40 up as far as I could and set off for the...

    Replacing rusty spark plugs

 Maybe just shelling out the £175 is the safest option....

    Replacing rusty spark plugs

Thanks for all the advice guys. Got some replacement plugs from Halfords already, and they are ready to go once I change the spark plugs. I've also got a spark plug spanner with a rubber insert. My plan then is to get the standing water out of the spark plug gallery and clean out the junk...

    Replacing rusty spark plugs

It is a Zetec engine. I've had a go at replacing the spark plugs with a spanner and they are pretty stuck in there.... The engine was warm rather than hot or cold when I tried it.

    Replacing rusty spark plugs

I've got a 2003 Ford Fiesta with just under 20k miles on it. Recently it started to develop a shudder which - according to my well-timed service - is due to a mis-firing spark plug. Despite being 4 years old, the plugs have never been changed... Turns out that my ignition cables had a...

    Leaky washing mashine hose connector

The joint with the copper pipe is ok, as is the tap. The water is leaking from the joint of the hose and the tap. Thanks

    Leaky washing mashine hose connector

Hi, I found a puddle in my kitchen last night, which I tracked back to a dripping washing hose connection - where the hose screws into the washing machine tap. Ideally I should probably replace the tap / hose I'm guessing, but the tap itself is in a very awkward position and is really...

    Whistling taps?

The cold water tap in my bathroom has recently developed a habit of whistling quite loudly. (And it isn't even a good tune!). The volume gradually increases and decreases, but it can last for quite a while. Turning the cold tap on stops the whistling. We think (but aren't certain) that the...

    Changing sink waste pipes

..... er ..... are you not supposed to use PFTE tape on these types of values??

    Changing sink waste pipes

Apologies for what might seem a really simple question, but I really hope somebody can help me. I recently changed my kitchen sink from being an overmounted one to and under-mounted one. Because the sink intrudes into the base cabinet more than the last one, I'm having real problems trying to...

Fused plugs in a fused spur

OK, so it looks as if I should; 1. Split out the one spur switch a double plug into two seperate spurs, each with their own fuse. 2. Replace the appliance fused plugs with unfused ones, so that the fuses always blow in a convenient place. I can get my electrician back to do (1). On...

Fused plugs in a fused spur

Thanks for the responses and advice so far. I've had this recuring nightmare for some time about the plug fuse going in one of these appliances and trying to get at it to replace. As a novice, I thought it could just be uninformed paranoia, but it looks as if there is no clear answer out...

Fused plugs in a fused spur

I'm in the process of getting my kitchen re-done, and I've gone for an integrated diswasher and washing machine. (To satisfy Part P, all of the major electrical work was conducted by a qualified electrician of course :) ). The dishwasher and washing machine both have molded 13amp fuses in...
