    Copper mains "thinning"

Hard water (~270ppm), plastic service pipe, house looks to have been built around 1970. Thanks for your help and opinions. Subject closed as far as I'm concerned. Incidentally, I once came across a gas service pipe earthing over 40A via the Suprima PCB (on a TNC-S electrical supply with...

Banging pipes are driving me crazy!

Just going back to your original problem, could it be a water softener regenerating each night? If you have one turn it off electrically for one night to eliminate it. As far as eliminating water related problems go turn off the water mains at night, and back on in the morning. Likewise turn...

Noisy Actuator which will not switch off

Newer design has easily removable head unit (no tools req'd). If so you can manipulate the valve shaft with a small spanner, and determine whether the fault is in the valve or head.

Baxi solo 2pf noise when HW switched on & top of rads wa

Turn all your rads OFF except 2 small ones. Does the symptom repeat on heating now? The reason for this could be that the flow rate through the cylinder is restricted compared to that through the CH circuit, and this could be due to the restricting (flow control) valve on the cylinder primaries...

Immersion tank thermostats blowing or burning out every 4 or

If you had a proper sparky change the supply components he would/should have checked for earth faults so this may be discounted. In any case the RCD should trip at 30mA to earth, compared to 13A for the normal heater load. When you had the system flushed what did this consist of? Normally I...

Soakaway from boiler overflow pipe / radiator pipes

Following on from Chrishutt's post, is this "overflow" pipe made of copper, plastic, or something else? What is it's outside diameter?

    Mysterious leak....

During a spell of dry weather don't use the appliances in the utility room or sink (go away for the weekend). Is it still as wet? Have you a water softener in this area? Likewise turn it off to test. Do any loft tanks discharge their overflow pipes above this area?

    Glowworm Economy Plus 50B-nothing working

Pumps are a prime suspect when fuses blow on the heating. Turn the heating OFF, replace the 3A fuse, and try hot water ON only. If it all stops when the heating is turned back ON then change the pump.

    Leaking close coupled pan

Could be a poorly made pan. There are different types of seal too, check with the retailer that you have the correct one. Try adding LOTS of silicone sealant :!: :!: :!:

how hard is it to get corgi?

If you have ACS you are deemed competant. Why not give CORGI a ring (and lots of money too) so they can send you a membership pack. Then get a job with an experienced contractor to gain experience. You can work under an employer's registration if you are competant, saving registration fees...

    heatline

Are you sure? Heatline rads used to be supplied from their depot in Bedford, but were made in Turkey I think.

    Copper mains "thinning"

Called to a customer's house at the weekend (and missed the 1st half of the Argie game :x ). He had a pinhole leak on the cold water mains. On trying to cut-out a section of pipe to make a repair using a standard Kopex cutter I found the pipe was so thin it would crush as the cutter rotated. It...

No hot water in tank coil but radiators good?

Sorry if I've not read any previous posts, and am repeating what others may have said. If you have no air bleed at the highest point then you should add one at the top coil connection at the cylinder (Obviously air collects at the highest point) In the meantime put a towel at the base of the...

    pump still running.should it?

I assume the system is still drained. A good move. Problem sorted, unless you want hot water :? Unless you have an immersion heater you'll have to refill the system to get the HW function to work. I have to ask, if you know so little about the system you are working on, why did you...

No hot water in tank coil but radiators good?

Absolutely, and you are right to have the HW return connected as the last 'tee' before the boiler return connection, this helps to avoid reverse circulation in summer.

    shower base

Generally I use a 3/4" WBP plywood base either on top of or instead of the floorboards, glued and screwed down for stability. Remember, if it moves more than about 0.5mm when you stand in it, it won'd seal properly to the wall or tiles. On that subject always leave about 3mm gap to the bottom...

    radiator thermostat problem..............

Could be you don't have a room thermostat? If this is the case the only way to turn off the heating is to turn down (off) all the rads, during the summer it can get so warm (even in Jockland) that the TRV innards break, therefore it won't turn off. If this is the case buy a new TRV and use the...

    Double Yellows

I suppose while cars and petrol are still cheap nobody will think twice about where to park it before they get one (or three). There are 15 adults in my street and at last count 22 cars owned by them. Perhaps we should pay more road tax to park on the road overnight.? Or maybe we should only...

    Gay

Ooops, thought this might kick-off.* Points to note are as follows (sorry it's the short version but I don't get paid unless I work, and would like to get paid today) 1. the original discussion was over the effect of name calling on a small boy, not what consenting adults in private get up...
