RCD problem discovered and cooker installation query

Thanks for both your replies. 1. Conduit - if it's all ok to have surface mounted cable just clipped to the wall behind kitchen cupboards, then it's fine with me! At least there'll be no drills going though'em! 2. RCD - the CU is Crabtree and installed (I guess) within the last 10-20...

    Odd noisy neighbour water problem

Thanks for your reply. Would 'water hammer' involve a knocking noise? The problem we have is a 'gassy' type noise, like the tap is half on rather than full. A sort of wooshing sound rather than banging.

RCD problem discovered and cooker installation query

We have had a company fit a new gas/electric cooker, including control panel. They are now requesting payment but I have two issues: 1. The wire that they have installed from the CU to a cooker switch then on to a cooker outlet, has been chased into the wall where I intend to install...

    Odd noisy neighbour water problem

We have a problem which is driving us mad!!! Our semi-detached house originally had a mains water supply that fed through from next door at just below ceiling height into a downstairs bathroom. Previous to us moving in, this was replaced by a separate water mains (modern blue pipe) that comes...

Design/Layout for raised beds for vegetable patch?

I'm currently doing a similar project so looked into this quite a bit. The really bad stuff CCA that was used for pressure treatment is no longer sold in the UK. Certainly not within the domestic market anyhow. My local timber yard uses Tanalith which seems a lot safer from what I've...

Gravel a concrete patio - help

I may be wrong but my understanding is that this should not be done. The basic rule being 'rigid on rigid and flexible on flexible'. In other words, the loose gravel on top of hard concrete would not be good. Read this: http://www.pavingexpert.com/faq_gravel01.htm

    Getting rid of pigeons

It wouldn't take much to find out what frequency would be effective and setup a low-cost solution yourself. Would just require suitable amp/speaker together with some sound synthesis software (plenty of free stuff online). Or alternatively there are various wav files of test tones availble...

Using POSTCRETE in a dry mix

I'm not a pro and only a diy'er but it seems to me that you're mixing up two differnt things: a) postcrete which will contain cement and ballast (sand/gravel aggrs) b) cement - which you would add to sharp/builders sand to create the mortar to lay paving. If you use the postcrete as a...

    embarrasing question

I found the little white circular fittings that ikea do to be reliable on good plaster. They're circular with 3 small pins that are ready to knock in.

    Screeded bed or individual mortar

Also: could you advise me on the order of laying. My scalpings subase has a small fall away from the house. Do I start laying first at the top of the fall or start at the bottom? I was thinking of starting with a 'keystone' type method at the bottom of the fall in a certain place where I...

    Screeded bed or individual mortar

Thanks for response guys. Always great to have pros advice. I'll go for solid bed, individually bedded but with a slightly drier mix than a normal mortar. What's the reason for the drier mix? Sure I'll discover when I start! Only thing: the horizon is machined and highly calibrated on all...

    Screeded bed or individual mortar

I'm going to start laying patio on Monday and still unsure about best method, considering: 1. using machine cut sandstone (horizon slabs from stonemarket) ie. little vartion in thickness and almost like tiles 2. I'm a novice and have heard individual bed is easier! 3...

My hardcore was nice and compacted, and now it's not!

Sorry maf - I'm just gonna hijack your thread a second! Related Q: My compacted mot has been down for several months, well compacted but I haven't yet manged to lay the slabs. What I've noticed is that the top surface has changed as the rain has washed the fine dust lower down. Still seems...

    Plate compactor

Got there in the end. Thanks. Was damp anyhow for some reason which did help. Arms are suffering a little though since I also asked for 1 1/2 tons loose and meant to say bagged up! Spent couple of hours shifting from A to B. . . Oops!

    Plate compactor

Cheers Thermo Going good so far. Done at least 4/5 passes and it's just started staying nicely compacted. Probably do another couple or so, especially in areas that needed a bit added becasue of dips in level. One problem: hadn't realised how much it would churn up compacted material on...
