Insulating plastered rooms with insulated plasterboard

Hi, I have a house with a cavity wall which currently has plaster applied directly to it. The house is quite old and I live in a very wet area do I do not fancy my chances with the sort of insulation that is pumped into the cavity. What I'd like to do is use insulated plasterboard on the walls...

Vaulting a ceiling -- what to do with the rafter ties

I'll have to draw on later on; I just put the osb boards back; one of the reasons I want to do this is because the attic space is utterly useless, you can only really crawl in it and it's an absolute pain to access; I'd rather that the space was "given to room". it's not going to happen in a...

Vaulting a ceiling -- what to do with the rafter ties

Yep, that's an idea too. although I'd have to see what the saving actually is once plasterboard, extra timbre and I guess time is taken into consideration.

Vaulting a ceiling -- what to do with the rafter ties

Cheers, that sounds like a goer; although for another day. The expensive bit imagine is the sheer amount of thick Kingspan I'll need to insulated the ceiling!

Vaulting a ceiling -- what to do with the rafter ties

Thanks for the reply. That seems VERY difficult to retro fit and additionally and I am not sure there is a load bearing wall at both ends (there is at one end). I wonder whether its possible to rather than remove the rafter ties altogether, they could be replaced with something more...

Vaulting a ceiling -- what to do with the rafter ties

Hi, The master bedroom of my house which I am slowly doing up occupies the entire width gable end of the house. The room has a flat conventional ceiling although at far right and left of the room the ceiling slops in a bit where the roof "cuts in" a little. I think this room would look and...

Best way to finish Teak? -- getting the right tone

Thanks for the replies I am not worried about removing the current finish, the question is really about how I'd recreate the richer tone again?

Best way to finish Teak? -- getting the right tone

Hi, I have some cabinetry and a dining room table which have teak veneers. Both appear to have a wax finish; as if the wood gets wetted then a wax substance tends peel and ball up into a waxy mess. However one has a very vibrant Orangey colour, where as the other is a richer red tone. IMO...

Self levelling compound onto of existing screed self-levelling.

Hi I have a floor that I am hoping to lay down some parquet flooring I am painstakingly in the process of cleaning block by block. The floor where I want to lay it is a concrete slab with two layers (separated by a red member - might just be thick/gloss paint) of screed/self levelling compound...

How to level a floor prior to laying parquet

Hi, I have a floor a concrete floor that has had a skim coat applied to it by the previous owners. The floor is not all that level and not all that even either. I want to lay a parquet floor and as far as I can tell I have a few options. Just lay the parquet, don't worry about the subfloor...

What construction method does this wall have? (troubleshooting damp)

So you reckon I can get this cavity as clean as I can, so any crap is below the DPM and we're good to seal it back up? Oh sorry, wasn't trying to game the system or anything, I just didn't want to distract from this post - but wanted to start preparing and getting the materials for the end of...

Batten Wall vs Render and plaster

Is that considered better than constructing a batten wall? Time and to a degree cost is not a huge issue.

What construction method does this wall have? (troubleshooting damp)

Hi again. > the outside ground level is much higher than the inside FFL I took some measurements, the top of the internal concrete floor (and top of the DPM) is 2" (50mm) higher than external ground level. The DPM on the external wall is 7" (170-180mm) above the ground level. I drew a...

Batten Wall vs Render and plaster

Hi, I have just stripped back the plaster work on a wall that I've have performed a damp repair on. The issue i have now is that that state of the aerated concrete block (I think thermalite) is really bad. This wall originally had a render on it, that was stripped back by the pervious owner...

What construction method does this wall have? (troubleshooting damp)

No problem, I really appreciate your help with this. Does it only matter if they're above the DPC? As I said, I am really going to struggle to get any access even with a vacuum below slab. I think it'd take a month of sundays to do that for the whole room? I think that big lump you can see...

What construction method does this wall have? (troubleshooting damp)

After A LOT of cleaning Best I could do. Straight down To the right To the left (you can just about make out that void, below the lip, get a lot deeper here). This is a pic of the black DPM from the exterior wall as view from inside the cavity. It is higher than than the DPM...

What construction method does this wall have? (troubleshooting damp)

Noted. I don't really NEED the room for a few more weeks - but the room does contain contents which can not easily be removed so I am weary about turning a fan on too high and blowing dust everywhere. That said on a lower setting + fan heater + dehumidifier is very doable. I might be able to...

What construction method does this wall have? (troubleshooting damp)

Ok, wall opened up. And wow, so much debris bridging the cavity. I can definitely confirm that both the outer wall has a DPC (a black layer which I can see for the exterior, and the interior wall is built onto of the concrete slab which has it's own transparent plastic layer which then "folds...
