    TV License

I've not got a TV! It's all ballacks anyway. The license is an outdated tax on a home entertainment device. Nothing more. It is wasted on paying studios full of radio DJs to sit around talking rubbish for hours, buying rubbish programs and paying execs hundreds of thousands of pounds a year...

    Mcafee Virus scan

I have Mcafee Internet/total security 2008. Within this is a virus scan software which has somehow decided to perform a scheduled scan every Friday morning. If I leave the PC on overnight it runs in the early hours, however if my missus switches the PC on in the morning to work from home...

    Electric tile cutters

I've had some success with a more expensive plasplugs machine. No way a pro would use though, simple fact is it takes quite a while to cut with it.

Is Britain be-coming a third world country?

Not so good in Staffs, they wrote to my mother asking words to the effect of "do you still want the operation?". Appalling.

Time to use shower after grouting

I will be grouting up a tiled shower area (4mm spacers) with BAL superflex grout. BAL's "general grout" leaflet indicates that the grout should be left for 14 days before the shower is used. This is going to be extremely inconvenient - the bath was removed over two weeks ago (suite has been...

    Imperial /Metric Units

Oh dear, Charles Wells brewery have changed their Bombardier bottle size from an English pint (568ml) to 500ml. Noticed last night. Still says "Beer of England" on it though, it's just no longer in an English quantity!

    Close coupled cistern/pan leak

Tightened the siphon backnut on better, then tested prior to fitting. An hour-odd later, and all seems well. It had better stay that way since I am off out to the pub now  Thanks a lot for the advice, it is appreciated.

    Close coupled cistern/pan leak

OK I'll give those tips a try and see how I get on. It was leaking when the cistern was filled, not just on flushing. This may be related to the siphon back nut but I cannot get it any tighter by hand. Can I use a wrench for this? I have a rubber washer on this at the inside of the cistern...

    Close coupled cistern/pan leak

I am having a dilemma with a close coupled WC. I have assembled the job exactly as drawn in the paltry instructions (thanks a lot Bathst*re :x ) and it is not working! The problem centres around the cistern outlet and pan entry point. Water is leaking out from somewhere. I have a doughnut...

    Thick beds

Thanks, nice to know that this one can be ticked off my "worry about" list.

    Thick beds

Dot and Dab - most serpently not! By coverage I meant a reduced number of m^2 per bag. I think you got mixed up with coverage over the back of the tile. What I was doing was not pressing on terribly hard with the notched trowel so the "furrows/troughs" of the notched pattern did not...

    Adhesive in grout spaces

As it happens I have an old chisel I found in a ceiling void, sharpened it on the honing stone and hey presto, an instant "unwanted adhesive" remover. Missus has been handy, carding the joints out and doing all the wiping when I've been sticking them on. I've had to provide my own beer...

    Thick beds

Other than poor area coverage, are there any downfalls of having thick beds of adhesive on wall tiles? The reason I ask is that I think I have been a bit generous with it!! Not quite got the hang of using the notched trowel and may have been mixing it a bit on the thick side. Looks OK...

    Adhesive in grout spaces

Paint brush? I have a missus with a cloth waiting!!! Got an old wood chisel and carefully raked out the excess adhesive. Some excellent tips on laying though, thanks!!

    Adhesive in grout spaces

Thanks, I'll have a good look this morning, there is nothing protruding past the tile faces, it's a few mm back in most areas, there are just a couple of inches where the adhesive has "squidged" out between the tiles and is sitting flush with the tile face. I'll get some card at the ready for...
