painting or removing woodchip?? help please !

You might be lucky - as i stripped my wall with my steam stripper and actually thought it was a doddle. Im a fan of "silk" paint too - the intiailly first tear (as I did not pierce the paper) was the hardest and as it got hotter i found that the paper came off in relatively long pieces and the...

Plaster Coving - Bumpy, - can adhesive be sanded down?

Thanks roughcaster - thats doesnt sound good at all :( . I have called him and he has said that its not finished (although i have to question that as he had given me back my door key) he basically said to do a "mist coat" or a thinner coat first and this would show up the imperfections (but i...

Plaster Coving - Bumpy, - can adhesive be sanded down?

I've had some plaster coving put up in my lounge by a builder who used Coving Adhesive. Is it normal when putting up coving that on one length of the wall that 2-4 pieces might be used as I think they were offcuts from my bedroom. As the problem I have is that where there is a join you can see...

Insulating Loft - how thick is too thick?

Thanks JohnD Think I need to go up there and find out what the thickness is then - I do have those chipboard floors (not nailed down) but scattered across so that I know there is at least 2 joists under me but am now thinking of getting the floor boarded up. Thanks again

Insulating Loft - how thick is too thick?

I insulated my loft a few years ago - and still have some left over rolls. Is it worth me using the extra on top of those that are already down baring in mind that i wont be able to see the joist because of the thickness or will it add no more benefit to what i have already. Reason im asking...

    Negotiating price on quote

Thanks Simoniris for your information input. I appreciate that builders have to go out and quote on jobs only to find that they may not be chosen - I too have had timewasters - some don't even turn up, others turn up late with no phone call to say they are delayed, some turning up and...

    Negotiating price on quote

I wasnt asking to be "cheap" (honest) just thought that as its over a few thousand (and the fact that there is a lot more work to do) but only because I actually thought that the price might have been marked up slightly. As he did mention with his quote that it might cost me a little more...

    Negotiating price on quote

Thanks for coming back to me. I wasn't wasting time for asking people out to quote - i thought as i don't have anyone to recommend me a builder/plasterer for the area that i live (or rather some cant make the appointments that were organised) i was under the impression that you should get a few...

    Negotiating price on quote

Just got a few quotes for a job I want doing is it normal practice to try and "negotiate" the price down by a little bit or would the builder take this as an insult I'm assuming that they might price the job slightly higher in the event the customer may try and get the price down.

    Clear/Pitched/Knotty Pine

i'm looking to get some internal pine doors - apart from knotty which i gather means you can actually see the "knots" in the grain of the door. whats the difference between clear and pitched. And out of the two which is the better quality? Thanks.

    Loft Insulaton

A couple of years ago i put down some "pink" loft insulation and it has served it purpose. But i only managed to insulate the main part as there is a section that you need to go through the rathers and step down into - i tried doing this part but as its about 8/9ft by perhaps 6ft with a sloping...

Odd Sized door - and extra wood added

Hi freddymercurytwin ive already looked at this site - my doors are 75 inches (190.5cm) high and just over 28.5 inches (728.5cms) - although the length is too long i gather i could get away with the 726cm - mind you the door Im measuring was fitted very well so I guess when the carpenter comes...

Odd Sized door - and extra wood added

Hi Reading through various posts on odd sized doors whichis the problem i have. IVe got a carpenter coming to have a look at the work i need doing and i explained that one of the doors is not standard - 28 and just over a half - said he could cut down a 30in door but that that was a lot to...

CHIMNEY BREAST REMOVAL - JSB/GALLOW BRACKET

Hi I know that I need planning permission to remove my chimney breast but is there a difference between a JSB and Gallow bracket support. As the builder who came around to look at the job basically said all i needed to do was ask my neighbours opposite and neighbour below (I live in a flat)...

Double Glazing - replace old wooden sash frame with timber??

Thanks Masona - i know when i had some other windows done - they put in some kind of straight edge post with mesh (sorry dont know what that is but you in the know might) and they plaster it all up so that I was left with nice edges. Im going to have to call them again anyway but Im sure they...

Double Glazing - replace old wooden sash frame with timber??

Double Glazing I’m having new UPVC windows installed. As I still have part of the old sash window frame in (left from previous owner) I want this taken out. I’ve had a quote for a double glazing firm – who said that’s not a problem as they should have been taken out in the first place...

    Tiling on Plasterboard

Im redoing my bathroom from scratch. Im knocking off the wall tiles and I know that I will have to replace the plasterboard as no doubt there will be some damage.
