    Expansion gap round hearth

Do I need an expansion gap around a hearth? The flooring is going to be solid oak, size of room about 12' x 11'. The hearth is sitting in front of a solid fuel fire. It's not a problem if I do, I'd just need to get some beading to cover it that's all. Alternatively I was wondering if an...

    Wet hardboard?

The sub-floor is old pine boards which are a bit tatty, it's also very dusty and they aren't perfectly flat. I decided that it would be easier to lay hardboard over this than to try to tidy the actual boards themselves. The oak I am putting down is 18mm solid oak which I will nail down using...

    Wet hardboard?

Good Evening I've ordered some oak flooring and am going to tidy up the subfloor (old boards) by fitting hardboard over it. When I ordered the hardboard and told the merchants what I was using it for they advised me to wet the hardboard before fitting it. I was a bit surprised at this...

    Wall Tie guarantees

Just out of interest, how is this company proposing to replace the ties? With anchor bolts? The reason I ask is that I had ties "replaced" on our house and have regretted it ever since for the following reasons:- The front wall brickwork (shiny faced accringtons) looks appalling with dots of...

    Can anyone tell me....?

Because you know when you've done it up, it will be a great house! A bit of graft is soon forgotten about when you're sitting in a newly decorated room, all done to your taste by you!! :D

    'Low-tac' masking tape

Good idea that, however some of the areas I want to mask off will be 7' high and I'd rather use a continuous piece of tape to get a nice straight line. Thanks for that tip though on reducing the tackiness.

DECORATING NEW PLASTER: A DIFINITIVE ANSWER PLEASE!

Try searching there are loads of posts on this. Why bother with a costly alkali resistant primer when you can simply mist coat the walls, as suggested in the loads of other posts on this subject?

    Damp help for a blondie!!

I think that they will provide you with a quote to treat the symptoms - but not the cause. If your chimney needs ventilating then get some quotes from a builder to put some ventilation into the top and bottom of the chimney. One good treatment for damp and lack of ventilation in chimneys...

    Fitting skirtings to brick wall

Would a hammer fixing, as shown below, be suitable for fixing skirtings to brick walls? I assume a hole is drilled to accept the plug and the pin then hammered in? Any advice on this, or alternative methods which are quicker then countersinking, screwing and filling would be appreciated.

    'Low-tac' masking tape

The first time, with the old tape, the paint was the mist coat which had been on a couple of weeks so should have been tough. The second time, with the new tape, the paint had only been on for less than 24 hours so wouldn't be tough.

    'Low-tac' masking tape

I'm having a hellish time with so called 'low tac' masking tape pulling new emulsion off newly plastered walls. I've mist coated with matt white Macpherson's emulsion diluted about 25-30% with water, then added a first coat of colour diluted about 15-20%. Upon applying ths tape, leaving it on...

Fitting pine fire surround to wall

I've got a pine fire surround which was supplied without brackets. I am wondering what the best way to fit this to the wall is. I have heard of the use of a "hook and eye" set up which allows the surround to be removed to allow redecoration - can anyone recommend this technique? Thanks

    Painting Coving

Try to blend out the steps using fine abrasive paper carefully. I'm doing exactly the same job at the moment where I've removed paint to fill cracks in coving.

    Problems with society

This is a fair point on what essentially has become a mockery of our "free country" and our right to freedom of speech. If I want to voice my opinion on benefit scroungers, extremist ethnic minorities, and all the other ills of today's society it is viewed dimly upon with race cards being pulled...

Can only bare wood be "knottied" ?

Sounds about right for B&Q, don't put the knotting stuff next to the paint you're going to use over the top of it  !!

    SPLIT: Rising damp?

Interesting post there Lastman. I would like to pick up on the point where you say you have seen rising damp solved by chemical injection. How many times have you seen this and in all cases was the internal plasterwork replaced to a height of 1 metre? Was the conclusion that the RD had been...
