    Traditional fillers or acrylic caulk?

I’m just fitting the hardwood sashes in to my existing bay window frame. They’ve had a couple of coats of aluminium primer and the first coat of undercoat. Now to do a bit of filling where the beadings have been pinned on, the slight gaps on the mitres and the gap between sash and frame. Should...

How to make a sump for underground water.

Decided I will add a couple of more air bricks above where the standing water is and also rough plied bricks in the water to create a bigger surface area to allow the water to evaporate quicker. Will then investigate the underground water when I’ve got more time. Richard

How to make a sump for underground water.

The area I live in is called Radipole Spa. Apparently up till the 1950's there were two laundry's about half a mile away serving the main town and they had large underground tanks to collect water.

How to make a sump for underground water.

I did think about this and it looks like there have been more air bricks fitted over the years. I'm going to fit a couple more around the corner walls where the water is lying. Someone suggested fitting an underfloor fan to push or pull the humidity out. Is this a possible solution? Richard

How to make a sump for underground water.

At the moment it is like a mud bath down there as the oversite in the void corner has broken up whilst trying to clear it exposing the underlying clay soil. This hasn't help with the water collecting there.

Yes, that's how I checked for a leak. Richard

How to make a sump for underground water.

Whilst replacing joists and flooring in our hallway I've discovered that corner of the house has lying water in the underfloor void. This is probably why the flooring has gone and that we suffer from condensation in the winter. I've started clearing the oversite which is like mud but as I take...

Would this need planning or building regs? Richard

    Using aluminium primer

Right, the third coat has now covered ok. Thanks. Is ally primer water resistant? I ask because I guess it will be a couple of weeks before all five lights are glazed and fitted. Especially when two of them are openers and the existing frame is well out of square! Would you recommend putting a...

    Using aluminium primer

It’s been many years since I last used aluminium primer and I can remember it was terrible stuff to use. Thick and draggy causing lumps and bubbles. I’ve just bought a tin of Dulux aluminium primer for my sapele windows. It look quite a while to get it mixed properly and I now realise the...

    Aluminium primer for exterior hardwood

Is it advisable to thin the first coat slightly and sand between that and the top coat? I seem to remember when I use it some years ago it was quite thick and draggy when applied and didn't seem to get down into the grain. Richard

Deck mount an open side BBQ shelter

Just finished laying a new decking area at the bottom of the garden and I was mindful to try and not make areas where water would be trapped and if not then properly treat before fitting. I now want to build a shelter in the corner to take my BBQ and decking furniture whilst not being used. I...

    Honda Izy running rough

Thanks for the explanation John, I think I understand. Anyway, I took the mower back to let the gardener use it and he says that it now runs well after having it running for about 40 mins. So maybe it was reside that had gummed up over the winter lay-up and petrol running through it has done...

    Honda Izy running rough

I still can't see it. Could you explain how that works please? Richard

    Honda Izy running rough

Having thought a bit more about this hunting problem. If the emulsifier tube is gummed up on the cross holes surely this would make the mixture run richer rather than causing a starvation. What if I added some fuel treatment that is used in cars for cleaning up the fuel injectors? Richard

How to prolong rot in a decking sub-base

That looks good but I've just had 150M of 47mm x 95mm delivered so 3 rolls plus extra for noggin ends, so likely to be about £80. Think I will stick with Black Jack. At least manufacturers have recognised the problem with decking joints. Richard

    Joist sizes for decking

I'm doing a new decking at the moment but it is over the existing grass/soil level. I am going to use 47mm x 95mm joists on 450mm to 500mm centres but I think the crucial issue is how close your supporting posts are underneath. I'm planning on having wood pillars every 1000mm to 1200mm in both...

How to prolong rot in a decking sub-base

Yes, cost is an issue as it is a fairly large deck and I have just taken delivery of the timber. Richard

How to prolong rot in a decking sub-base

I found some rot in my decking which I laid about 15 years ago but when I took a couple of the lengths up the frame underneath was in quite a poor state. Rotten in places and heavily black stained and damp in others. I've decide to completely renew but wonder how to protect the subframe from...
