Removing shower cartridge from handle body

Hi, Our shower is dripping from the handle. I've tried to take it apart so I could replace the cartridge, but I can't it out completely. I've removed the handle, which gave me access to the cartridge but when I unbolted it, the metal collar came with it and I can't work out how to detach it...

Plywood subfloor got wet and warped

Hi, I'm building a garden office, and built the subfloor using this plywood. It rained a bit (not a lot) before I managed to get a tarp over it, and then rained some more with some water coming through the tarp. Now it's dried out, I can see some areas where the wood has raised and split, as...

    Retaining wall advice

Hi, I'm looking to build a garden office at the bottom of my garden on what used to be a vegetable patch. As such, I was looking to lay a concrete slab as a base. Where my build differs to those I've seen elsewhere is that the area I want to build on has a drainage ditch directly next to it...

Attempting to 'reason' with a planning department.

Thanks for the replies. Council housing etc isn't on our radar. We can make do with what we have, it's just annoying that we're on a nice big plot with plenty of land out the back and to the side, and neighbours with no objections, yet we're not allowed to do extend our own home. We did look...

Attempting to 'reason' with a planning department.

This is something I've wondered about. In our case, we are a family of 8 living in what is currently a 4 bedroom house. We simply need more space and moving isn't an option. I'm presuming that's not something that would make any difference in an appeal though?

Attempting to 'reason' with a planning department.

This was a full application, not PD. The 50% is their own rule for what they do/do not allow when it comes to extensions. Thanks to all who have replied, I'll have a think about what to do next.

Attempting to 'reason' with a planning department.

Yeah I did briefly consider that, but the door in that wall is the only viable entrance into the kitchen.

Attempting to 'reason' with a planning department.

I'll rummage out the original report and drawings etc tomorrow. But some info from memory: With regards to the original extension plan, they said that they normally allow you to extend up to 50% above the original footprint. Somehow our house is already at 125%, so they've said that's our lot...

Attempting to 'reason' with a planning department.

Well we thought so, but they said no… The house already has a 3m single-storey extension so in theory we could go back to 6m from the 'original house' with PD. But apparently because the proposed extension touches other existing extensions, they evaluated them all as a single extension and said...

Permitted Development Outbuilding - distance from property

The appeal decision document doesn't mention is so I assume not, or is that a separate thing I need to apply for?

Attempting to 'reason' with a planning department.

Hi, Just wondering if this is worth a shot… Our 3m rear extension was denied on the basis that it was 'inappropriate development in the greenbelt'. We've now found that the council is going to allow 160 new homes to be built in the field literally on the other side of the road to our house...

Permitted Development Outbuilding - distance from property

FYI, this appeal was ruled in our favour. And the tone of the inspector's report suggested she was rather irritated with the council for wasting everyone's time!

    Painted doors, came out dimply

Any suggestions before I tackle it this evening? I want to get it nice and smooth before repainting, but my previous attempt suggests sanding will just make it worse…!

    Painted doors, came out dimply

Thanks all, I'll try again with a brush. I guess I should just sand it back before trying again, but with what grade? As you can see, my 600 just seemed to make things worse!

    Painted doors, came out dimply

I've painted a new door and I'm not happy with the finish. It's not smooth at all. There's a picture here which is a close-up and directly under a spotlight, so it really shows up the texture - in reality it doesn't look nearly as bad as this!! Here's what I did to get here: Bought a brand...

    A 1981mm door I can take ~20mm off..?

Ok, silly question time. When looking at the measurements listed for a door, are they the measurements of the door, or the measurements of the opening…? Google is returning conflicting results… I ask because I measured the height of my openings, and they're 1981mm which is a standard height for...

    A 1981mm door I can take ~20mm off..?

That's the plan but I've not found any that will let me. They all say max 5mm from top, 5mm from bottom.

    A 1981mm door I can take ~20mm off..?

Hi, My house has a load of 6 panel doors upstairs that aren't my cup of tea and want to replace them with simple, flush ones. The problem is that all the existing doors are around ~1965mm high, so I'm looking for a flush, hollow 1981 x 762 x 35mm door that I can take 20mm off in height - but...

    Removing textured ceiling/wall surfaces

I will do if I have to, but I think that'd mean getting a professional in and we've got so much work to do in this house that I'm keen to do anything I can do myself before I hand over to the professionals. They're actually fairly small surfaces so I'm happy to put in some elbow grease if means...
