Closeboard fencing - arris rails with brackets or cant rail?

Just thought of another numpty question!! Even though the wood will be pressure treated, am I right in thinking I still need to treat it? If so, then I'd rather do it before I assemble everything to make sure it's well covered, but if the wood is damp will I be able to do this? Any...

Closeboard fencing - arris rails with brackets or cant rail?

Hi all, going to have a go at erecting my first fence next week, after a bit of thought we've decided to go with closeboard. Been reading around on here and elsewhere but still have a few questions - be gentle!! First off, arris rails or cant rails? I gather that generally arris...

Good quality taps at a good price?

My Bristan kitchen tap has broken yet again, and now Bristan won't send me the parts FOC unless I can supply proof of purchase. I've had the tap around 5 years now, but it has broken to the point of being unusable 4 times within that time. Previously Bristan have supplied me with a new...

Hot water cylinder leak - essex flange

Hmmm, just had another look and I'm not so sure now. The floor under the tank is fairly wet, yet the joint around the essex flange is a little green, it's not looking particuarly wet, no obvious signs of water running down the outside of the cylinder either (don't think the water would run...

Hot water cylinder leak - essex flange

I've got up this morning to a leaking water cylinder. It has done it before when the heating was turned off for a week last year whilst on holiday, yet after running again it didn't leak, so I could not find the problem. Noticed yesterday a slight stain on ceiling below the airing...

Heaters - spur or separate circuit?

Well, great debate there guys. At the end of the day, if I decided to contact LABC have them come out before, during, after - whatever, then it would all be the same. My question would still remain. Either method is OK in terms of regs, circuit loading, etc but one probably makes more...

Heaters - spur or separate circuit?

Hold on a minute here. As has been suggested I am indeed a qualified electrician, albeit an electrical engineer, working in an industrial environment. As I am not part of any competent persons schemes the work will be tested & checked over by someone who is. How is this any different to...

Heaters - spur or separate circuit?

I am wiring a shed as follows: 40A MCB at house CU on non-RCD side feeding 3 core 6mm SWA up to shed (30m). This has been installed by NICEIC spark. I am going to do the wiring in the shed, which will then be tested & signed off by above spark. I had planned to use a 32A 30mA RCBO in...

Moving a light switch - notifiable?

Thanks guys, after a little more reading it did become apparent that Part P would not apply unless, as said, it shared a supply with a domestic dwelling. I had a look, and in actual fact, nothing needs moving. Only maybe some cabling re-routed within the void once the wall has been pulled...

Moving a light switch - notifiable?

A friend (carpenter) has been asked to take down part of a stud wall at a local golf driving range. As there is a light switch on this part of the wall he asked me if I would take a look, and possibly move the switch for him. I'm an electrical engineer by trade, but am not part of any...

Requirements & costs to be able to self cert??

Interesting to hear, my shifts are double days, 5 days a week so don't have many down days as such. What's your day job if you don't mind me asking? Also, again, as you do domestic work casually, what sort of rates do you charge? If that's too personal, my apologies, just ignore me...

Requirements & costs to be able to self cert??

Fair enough mate, after they stopped supplying voltage testers at work, all we have is a multimeter. So that's what I'm used to using to check circuits, etc. I've had my fair shair of shocks, not always my own fault. Either way it teaches me to double check, and even then I'll often arc...

Requirements & costs to be able to self cert??

Thanks for the advice guys, and don't worry, I'm by no menas scared off. I knew there would be a lot of work involved, and just wanted to be sure I was right. I think my brother in law often forgets that not everyone has the money/achievements that he has, he started out years ago with his...

Requirements & costs to be able to self cert??

Cheers for that. Had thought they may be a one-for-all tester, but hadn't looked for one. I'm so used to using a general multimeter that I'd still use one for general prodding around IMO. GS38 isoltaion testers? Do you mean leads? If so, then I have various sets that meet that requirement.

Requirements & costs to be able to self cert??

Thanks for your reply Spark123. I do tend to use the regs reasonably reguarly, but mainly for voltage drop or cable size lookup tables, as I say, we do a reasonable amount of machine mods, so have to factor in cable sizing, etc and should still work to the regs whatever we do with the...

Requirements & costs to be able to self cert??

I have done a lot of reading around on this but there seem to be many different bodies, lots of different courses, etc so I'd rather ask those in the know, who do it day in, day out. First off, I'm an electrical engineer, did a 4 year apprenticeship and have since worked 4 years as an...

    Ip44 luminaire above a shower?

Well, I was thinking along the lines of the shower being used to clean the walls. Fair enough, I'll let him know that I was wrong. I believe he has an RCD installed in front of both CCU's as when he had an extension added the spraky that did the work added a separate box, and separate RCD...

    Ip44 luminaire above a shower?

A friend of mine wants to install a light fitting above a shower cubicle. He bought one that was branded 'any zone', but it is an IP44 fitting. I told him that I didn't think you could use it as there is a likelihood of it coming into contact with water jets, in which case it would need to...

    Supplementary bonding in a bathroom

One other question, I know that main bonding has to be minimum of half of supply CPC, but what size is supplementary bonding suppose to be? Same again?

Separate electric oven & hob into single cooker outlet?

Plugwash, so how is best to do that? The cooker connection unit has terminals to accept 10mm, so I can't get two 6mm's in. How can I connect an FCU into the same circuit, and use the oven connection unit to connect to the hob? If I had the room, I'd spur from the supply to the cooker...
