OK This Is A Long Shot........

An update. I suppose I should have realised that the only solution was to remove the clay pipe and just got on with it. After a couple of days of looking at it and hoping something would occur to me I gingerly started breaking up the concrete. It was a long job and once most of it was out...

    Strange Gas Consumption

Has your next door neighbour tapped into your gas supply?

OK This Is A Long Shot........

Hi doitall, I have a strong suspicion that that is the only solution, but the floor tiles are porcelain and cost me £18 each. Doubt I can lift 'em with damage. Hence the cry for help!

OK This Is A Long Shot........

My wife suggested that as well. :D :D The damp patch is in the concrete, so I'm thinking a bit of standing water is finding its way through the joint down into the concrete. Obviously the concrete is porous and so the damp will, eventually, go down through the concrete floor. :(

OK This Is A Long Shot........

I've fitted a new toilet and connected it up, via a couple of feet of plastic pipe and an adaptor, to an old clay foul pipe. The floor round the toilet and the floor over the new pipe leading up to the clay pipe has now been tiled. The clay pipe is in two sections a straight section about...

    Earthing A Class 1 Light......

Looks like I've answered my own question: http://www.lightsuk.com/product.aspx?id=10051&categoryid=212 Thanks for the advice everyone. BTW what would be the average cost of a test and inspect for a four bedroom house in Shropshire?

    Earthing A Class 1 Light......

Thanks Adam, is it possible to get double-insulated zone 1 lights? BTW I had the house checked when I moved in (1979) and the electrician fitted an RCD. But I take your point, that's nearly 30 years ago now. :(

    Earthing A Class 1 Light......

Er guys perhaps I'll start again..... I seem to have confused the issue here. Entirely my own fault. I used the term 'class' when I think I should have been using the term 'zone'. It's a zone one light that has an earth terminal. Sorry for the confusion. Edit. The house...

    Earthing A Class 1 Light......

    Earthing A Class 1 Light......

Thanks for the replies everyone. Good job I asked. Two questions 1) Is there such a thing as a Class 1 insulated light? 2) Which bit counted as the grumble? :D

How do you change the bulb?

Funnily enough I've bought two of these (or very similar) recently. That chrome ring which contains a lens unscrews to reveal the bulb underneath.

    Earthing A Class 1 Light......

The lighting circuit in my house has no earth. I want to install two class 1 lights in a new shower room. In the loft above there will be the cold feed to the shower. If I connect an earth from the light to this and bond the cold feed to the hot feed and bond the hot feed to the central...

    Using A Crimping Tool....

First, thanks to everyone who has replied - most helpful. Regarding the link. Ref 3.4 in the document seems to make a distinction between 'wire barrel' and 'metal sleeve'. It implies that the wire barrel grips the wire and the metal sleeve grips the insulation. The butt crimp seems to...

    Using A Crimping Tool....

Thanks John. I'd noticed the dent and assumed the the wire had to extend that far. Does the insulation go into the metal tube as well? When the butt crimp goes into the pliers how can I judge its position before I apply pressure? Questions, questions - sorry. :(

    Using A Crimping Tool....

Prior to using it in anger I've been doing some experimenting and can't seem to get it right. I'm attempting a through crimp on 1mm sq cable. I'm using a red butt connector and a ratchet crimping tool. However a good tug pulls the wire out, that can't be right. How much insulation should I...

    Big, Big Problem......

Thanks again for your thoughts Redhotferri. Not sure about that JPC, although thanks for the advice. My concern re building regs was: 1) That I had moved the toilet and although only a foot or two it did involve some additional pipe work in making up to the existing soil pipe. 2) That...

Annoying droning noise from new Worcester boiler (updated)

I had a 30CDi fitted in November 2005. It was very quiet until about a year later when it gradually got louder and louder on firing up. It was at its loudest as the boiler temperature went through the 50 to 60 degree range. The installers said it was out of guarantee (which it wasn't) and...

    Big, Big Problem......

Bahco, JohnD, RedhotFerrari thanks for your replies. I'll explain a little. The house is quite old (1845). A previous occupier had a single story extension built along the back of the house, 1.2 mtrs wide, 3.5 mtrs long. The extension was two rooms. At the far end was an outside toilet...
