    shelves on false wall

I need to move my cookery book shelves in the kitchen. The only place for them to go is with the long side on a false wall and the short side on a brick wall. The false wall is about 1cm thick, goes floor to ceiling and made of chip board. Shelves are 1in thick solid pine windowsills approx 80cm...

    Chimney breast removal

We'd like to have the chimney breast removed from our bedroom as it doesn't give the room any character and is just a waste of space as we need the room for another wardrobe. If we have that removed, does the rest of the chimney in the loft and in the roof have to come down too or can the...

    stripping paint

What paint stripper would you recommend for removing paint from old doors? I'm using the heat gun which is fine for the top 2-3 layers, but the bottom two are very stubborn and coming off as dust (which is a worry as they are old and I fear they may have lead in them). Don't want to get them...

    removing nail

I've managed to pull one out and it is a straight-side rivet thing. But both knobs are attached in this way. The knob has a hole on the opposite side to the rivet, so can I knock it through from the other side? If so with what?

    removing nail

John - yes I managed to take a few off in that way, but several are attached on both sides with the nail-like things! (sorry still haven't got photo - tomorrow hopefully!)

Jackrae - I'll give that a try later. BTW 1950s doors, would they be built in this way?

    removing nail

Definitely not grub screws (had to google as I didn't know what they are!) or any kind of screw. they look like the same small-headed nails/pins that were used to attach the panels to the door. I wouldn't mind it they fell out, but they don't. i suspect the go right the way through into the...

    removing nail

I'm slowly renovating our internal doors. Been trying to remove the handles, but at some point in the past someone has nailed the (sorry, don't know the technical terms) ball part of the handle on, rather than using a screw. (the nail is in the hole the screw would normally be.) I've tried using...

    removing panel attached to door

Thanks I'll give that a go. I do actually have pliers (somewhere!)

    removing panel attached to door

Some of our old internal doors have panels attached over them (think they must've been done in the 60s when flat doors became the fashion). I can see they have been nailed on with tiny nails that look like pins. What's the best way of removing the panels without damaging the door? (Please...

    stripping paint - lead?

THanks. I'll search for that thread. but re dipping - i thought that didn't do the door any good?

    stripping paint - lead?

Do I still need to test them if I strip them outside? Should I wear a mask? £20 a pop soon adds up to far too much!

    stripping paint - lead?

I'm planning on stripping all the paint off our internal doors. The house was built in the 1950s. Do I need to check them for lead? Was it still used in paint then? If so, what's the best test to use (and preferably ones that don't cost a fortune as there are 8 doors in total!) I have young...

    extension ideas

manhole etc are where the propsed kitchen is. bathroom is directly above current kitchen. The "tunnel" (which doesn't actually go underground and i'm not sure why it's significant) is to the left of the house. I've drawn them more or less in line, so the breakthrough is just about in line with...

    extension ideas

Where is your present bathroom and S&VP? bathroom is above present bathroom, so all of that is outside current kitchen (where the extension will go). Where is the outside manhole(s) and where does the drainage run to? manhole is just outside kitchen. drain I think runs straight down the...

    extension ideas

I've done a (very rough) sketch of another idea for my kitchen extension. Hope it makes sense. We have a fairly average sized 3-bed mid-terrace. Are there any problems you can see? Is it possible to have a loo and utility basically in the middle of the house? Roughly how much do you think...

    shelves (floating or near floating)

thanks - it's a good job I asked as I was imagining smaller brackets than that! Might not be worth the compromise. might need to get someone in to properly fit floating shelves! I love cooking, so my kitchen has to look good as well as be very practical.
