It's a bungalow. Yes, just turn a tap on the boiler and it fills. I'm pretty sure I'm going to drain, seems simple enough to do and refill. It's just that I have been told by several people that I don't need to, so wanted to check.

Get a new door? Just because it needs painting? How stupid is that? 80% came off really easily with a scraper, other 20% I did with a hot air gun. Painted it with Hammerite special metals primer, next going to use hammerite garage door paint.

So, what's the best way to get the paint of. If its galvanised, doesn't that mean it's steel?

Hi, My garage door looks like it has dandruff. I can see that it is galvanised underneath the paint. Do I need to strip all the paint off? It looks like if I don't, it will continue to flake. Not sure if it was done correctly, but could just be old. Thanks, Mick

I could find lots of links that "prove" my argument as well but that wont really help. If you read a few of those links they actually say that I just need to put plenty of soil on top and it will be fine.

Can someone please explain why using rubble for the fill is a problem? Obviously I will place enough soil on top to make sure it is level before adding turf. If I was putting houses on it I would compact to reduce differential settlement but its only a lawn.

So, you are saying that I should fill over 50cm with expensive topsoil instead of 6 inches of soil with hardcore underneath? Why? It will be much more expensive, I will have to pay to get rid of the broken slabs then pay for soil to fill their void.

So what would you use to raise the level of the lawn?

Right, I am in now. Screwdriver and hammer worked. How can I replace this lock? It has a plate on the inside of the door. It had a "nightlatch" fixed to this plate, If I buy a new one will it come with a plate? Or will a new Yale one fit this old plate? Cheers, Mick
