Hi, I have planning permission for an extension and I am trying to keep my costs down. In order to build the extension I need to demolish an existing single story, flat roofed out building. This is quite close to my neighbours conservatory which I don't want to damage. Having never...

Planning Permission - Do I need to buy plans from previous?

I had something similar, I called the architect who did the plans for the approved extension to my house and he sold me the original CAD files for £50 and gave me written permission to use them as I saw fit.

Hi, I've had planning permission for a single storey extension to the rear of my house. I have spoken to my local building control office and they say i have 2 options - full building regs permission or a building notice. Both options cost about the same, but I'll need building regs drawings...

    Foundations

I am about to build a conservatory, and need to put down the foundations. I am building from a kit which has a steel base which sits on 8 concrete pillars for the foundation. Could someone tell me what sort of concrete mix would be best? The pillars are 450mm cubed. Alternatively, can...

OK, here goes - I've solved the problem. But before I tell you what it is I must get on my knees and apologise profusely for being an ass and wasting all your time and brain power. But I do thank you for all your help and good work you do for idiots like me who should be banned from DIY. My...

    Mains powered Smoke Alarms

apparently the fire brigade will send out an inspector to test smoke alarms if you ask - they won't send the whole fire engine though, just a man in a car. one of the 4 detectors (first on the chain) doesn't beep at all 2 of them seem to beep alternately every minute (middle 2) or so and one...

    Mains powered Smoke Alarms

Ok checked inside and can't see a battery anywhere. I checked the product on Srewfix (where i bought them) and they are not fitted with a battery back up (there is a version that is, but not what i bought being a cheap skate!). http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?id=10476&ts=14938...

    Mains powered Smoke Alarms

I definately can't see a pp9, but as i said earlier they do beep even when disconnected from the mains so there must be some battery backup. I've had all my upstairs windows open today (i'm bloody freezing now) and they seemed to have shut up, so I guess my theory about the paint fumes might be...

    Mains powered Smoke Alarms

Thanks, I'll take one apart and see if they can be replaced. I think the units are sealed though, and there is no mention of the back up batteries in the instructions. You'd have thought the manafacturer would have told me that when i spoke to them!! :?

    Mains powered Smoke Alarms

I don't think the battery back up is duff, I disconnected them and they still beep even without mains power which suggests to me the batteries are ok.

    Mains powered Smoke Alarms

Hi, I have installed 4 linked Mains powered smoke alarms in my house and they have been fine until yesterday. They have started letting out an intermittant 'beep' about every 55 seconds. I called the manafacturer who told me they had no idea why they would do this and suggested i cleaned them...
