    Replacing a wired smoke alarm

The 2 wired smoke alarms in our house are 10 years old. The previous tenant had tampered with them so to be on the safe side I'm replacing them. The alarms are Deta and the model has been discontinued. Will I be able to replace them with any new wired alarm? (The wires are in a 'plug'...

Booster Box connected to electrical supply

Echo the Husky was right, whilst it looked like the wires coming up through the floor, they were discarded ends. Pleased I had the electrician check it out (peace of mind about the wiring for the booster) and he only charged a tenner for his petrol.

Booster Box connected to electrical supply

We think something has been removed but don't know what. Decided best to have it checked out by a qualified electrician. I'll let you know the outcome. Many thanks for your replies

I'm attaching some photos, rather concerned at the bare wires.

Booster Box connected to electrical supply

I've discovered a booster box in the loft wired to the bedroom ceiling light. I don't know who installed it and am wondering whether it needs checked out by a qualified electrician. Also,if it had been installed by an aerial technician would that be acceptable? (The cable from it leads down the...

    Which Emulsion

I usually buy Dulux matt pure brilliant white. My painter said he likes Leyland. (He's a good painter) I'm now having to do some painting myself (cash strapped). If I use Leyland do you think it would be the trade contract he would use. I don't like to ring and ask him given he's not doing the...

    Baxi Boston Heat Shield

Many thanks Tony. Of course there could be a divorce over the purchase, I'm all for a combi (more room where the tank is now housed as well as other pluses) and my husband hates them with a vengance.

    Baxi Boston Heat Shield

I think it is this, but only the white insulation board that has dropped off and broken in two. It had been stuck on. http://www.plumbcenter.co.uk/product/baxi-235381-carrier-insulation-front-door-assembly/ We've tried many sites but all say either obsolete or when we ring they don't have it in...

    Baxi Boston Heat Shield

I've just had my Baxi Boston 2 Boiler serviced, it's 17 years old. The boiler looks in good condition and has been passed as safe to use. However, the heat shield (looks a bit like a narrow wafer biscuit) has broken / fell off the front burner plate. I don't want to buy a new boiler, can parts...

Visonic Powermax Alarm - Changing the fob battery

Many thanks. We found the original instructions that came with the fob. Looks like all we needed to do was change the battery, the fob should still be programmed. It's at my son's flat so we'll have another go tomorrow. If it still doesn't work, and we manage to get the other 3 to respond, it...

Visonic Powermax Alarm - Changing the fob battery

I was having problems with one of the fobs and thought it needed a new battery. I replaced the battery and as I didn't know which of the 4 fobs it was, tried to set it as a new fob number 5. I've obviously done something wrong as one of the other fobs is notlarming or disarming the system. How...

Disease, fungus or moss, what is damaging my spruce tree?

I'm trying to find what is on the bark and branches of my blue spruce. It was planted a couple of years ago, has been neglected and hardly grows. It has some sort of blight, primarily from the bottom, branches are covered in a tight pale greeny white growth. It can be scraped off with a finger...

    Decorative Gas Fire Ventilation

Meant to say, it doesn't have a model number on the fire or in the documentation and I don't know what a days badge is.. The only thing on the actual fire is NGC and the gas fitter didn't know what that stood for.

    Decorative Gas Fire Ventilation

The fire was made by DGF fabrication. It is classed as a Special Decorative Gas Fire. When having it fitted into the chimney wall we had to have alterations done to the 'opening' to allow for draw up the chimney. The spec in the installation book states it is 16" NV Taper Tray, minimum heat...

    Decorative Gas Fire Ventilation

I've had a gas fire fitted and serviced without additional room ventilation. for the last 4 years. Once in the past the gas fitter wasn't going to pass the ventilation but showing him the details on the fire he accepted it wasn't necessary and passed it. This year the gas fitter said it must...

Pilot cutting out on Baxi Boston 2 floor standing Boiler

Hopefully all repaired (got the firm who fitted the boiler). Evidently the heating shield had cracked and dropped down on the pilot. In the first instance the gasfitter replaced the thermo coupling as part of the stepped approach to diagnosing the fault. I'm trying to look on this positively, I...

Pilot cutting out on Baxi Boston 2 floor standing Boiler

Many thanks guys. I'll let you know what the 'new' gas fitter diagnoses. Annoying to think it's all been a waste of money, and yes the original gas fitter is registered. As an aside, we've had the boiler since 1999 and this is the first time we've had a problem. It was serviced in May and given...

Pilot cutting out on Baxi Boston 2 floor standing Boiler

Noticed that the water wasn't heating after checking, saw the pilot light had gone out. We relit it, it went for 5 minutes and cut out again. We had a gas registered fitter come and check it, he said it was the pump so we bought a new pump which he fitted. This was Monday, Wednesday went to...
