    External rendering help

Do you know where I can find them? I've been reading on here about the insulation thing but not sure what else I need to comply with.

    External rendering help

I need to re-render the external walls of my house but have never done it before. I know it's probably something I should get an expert in to do but for various reasons that is not possible and anyway I want to learn. The house is costal and gets hammered by driving rain so my plan is put a...

    stopping a door warping

No, it's just a standard interior door (Jewsons). I can't see any other moulded door being any better though. The last one was solid wood and it had warped but it had probably been there for many years. Is there any type of door that is least lightly to go the same way?

    stopping a door warping

I've recently replaced an interior door (big old 50mm thick thing that was warped) with a new cheap moulded door. It's between a hot living room and a cold porch. Door was primed and has 2 coats of paint on to stop any moisture getting in. It seems that this door has now warped too, I...

What size cold water tank do I need?

I've got a vented hot water cylinder (160L) that heats water with an immersion. It's the only hot water for the house and will be used for 4 sinks (15mm pipes) and a bath (22mm pipe). Can anyone advise me what size cold water tank I need for this in the loft? Nothing else will come from the cold...

    Old gas appliance removal

Hi, I have just moved into an old house that has a really old gas cooker / oven range thingy that just looks dangerous and needs removing. I also have two very old gas fires in other rooms that also need to be removed. Eventually I will pay for new combi boiler and heating system to be...

New door with no lock block

no, I agree - just my time and the fact that it takes me 3 days for a round trip to get back to Jewson's and it took the same to get the door in the first place (I live on an island off the coast of Scotland). Obviously not worth doing for just a door which is why I wondered about trying to...

New door with no lock block

There is definitely no block on either side. It's a standard internal moulded door (about £20- £25) - primed but not painted. Do some come without lock blocks then? I bought seven doors and the first 4 all had blocks (although they were all 686mm or 610mm wide). The one without the block is...

New door with no lock block

Just spent a few hours installing a new bathroom door (painting, planing it to fit a frame that isn't very true, hanging it) and then when I go to install the lock / handle there is no lock block. Thinking I must have put it on the wrong way I checked and it's definitely marked lock on the side...

    tiling onto painted plasterboard

Hi, I need to tile onto some new plasterboard in a kitchen but didn't think and have put two coats of emulsion onto the boards first. Can I tile onto this now or do I need to do anything first? Thanks. Tim.

    extending 12v kitchen unit lights

I have got a set of downlights for under kitchen units. There are 5 x 12v halogen lights from 1 transformer (from B&Q). The lights all have connectors and plug in to a connector block on the transformer. The cable on each light is 2.4m but this is not enough for one of the lights so my...

    FCU and socket question

Yes but I thought the FCU was also for protection (hence the Fuse and not just a switch). So if it's just for isolation purposes can you just use a switch (or a switched socket). In other words, is the fuse necessary?

    FCU and socket question

Hi, I know the norm for kitchen appliances (Fridge / Dishwasher etc.) is to run a spur with a FCU switch above the worktop and a socket without a switch near to the appliance. I have two questions : 1. Can the fused switch and socket be combined into one? If so, Is a standard swiched...

kitchen worktop joining (how to tighten bolts)

Hi, I've just done my first masons mitre joint on a kitchen worktop but now I'm wondering how to tighten the bolts as the worktops are joined above a corner unit below that doesn't have access to get to the bolts ! I considered cutting holes in the top of the units but the position is where...

    warping of kitchen unit backs

Thanks John, the units are just build and standing in my living room at the moment until the kitchen is ready for them. There doesn't seem to be any other problems with damp in that room but it would have been fairly cold as the heating was not on when I was away for 2 weeks. I'm suprised at...

    warping of kitchen unit backs

Not sure if this is the right place to post but hoping somebody can help. I have just built some kitchen units (Homebase) with hardboard backs to the units. They aren't installed but are in my house and were for a long time before building them (no damp). I had to go away for a couple of...
