What span for deck joist noggins?

Thanks yeah I think i asked a few questions, but did a fair bit of research. I've seen a few videos where larger dedicated teams do the same thing so just figured it was fine; i considered digging down and adding a few pavers i have sitting around as padstones, but it seemed overkill as there's...

What span for deck joist noggins?

Yeah it's a hard one to know when enough is enough and you can drive yourself crazy in the research. I found all the clearspan tables/forumlas complicated as there's a lot of subjective info regarding the applied weights and ultimately what someone deems as enough flex. I would have gone thicker...

What span for deck joist noggins?

Yes that's right, all same thickness. There's posts every 1-1.5m (depending where) that are down at least 2foot. Checked with various tables and online here in a couple of posts and consensus was it was ample. Seems solid too. (There are 25 posts in that picture, just hard to see)

What span for deck joist noggins?

Hi all - I've been working on my first deck as and when I have time which has turned into a monster project (for me at least) but almost there. For the most part I have spans of 1.45m (47x100 c24) and trying to work out if it's worth putting noggins in or not. I've tried to find out online what...

    Burying hose pipe

Hi all- Bit of a left field one; I have two water butts connected to out buildings that fill up really quickly during the winter. Previously I've been emptying them manually but during a rainy couple of days they can fill quickly and spill over before I have a chance to sort it, so I've bought...

    Composite deck expansion for walls

Hi all - I'm progressing through my composite decking project slowly but surely, and a new question has popped up regarding expansion gaps. The manufacturer instructions say to keep a 20mm expansion gap against any solid structure. However as I've started to lay the boards out I've realised how...

Easy way to fix joists steady

An update; I tried nails but I clearly don't have the skill to hold the nail, the hammer and the joint steady without a lot of fumbling, and the clamp is never strong enough to not budge with the hammer hits. I also tried piloting but still had the problem when the head of the screw bit in. So...

Finding my DPC - any tips?

Hi all - I'm fixing ledgers to my house for my deck using through bolts - I've done 2 so far but they were off a new extension, and because i had photos of the build and a door to go off I could work out where the DPC roughly was. But I need to put one on an older part of the house (block...

Easy way to fix joists steady

Thanks @woody - I might head down and get some various fixings and see what i like using the best before i commit to a system for the entire deck; will lend up buying stuff i don't need but that's all part of it and will go into my kit. Yes those coach screws are great I've actually got them for...

Easy way to fix joists steady

Yup, clamps seem a go-er. I'm just at the start of the process and wanted to make the best system out of it as lots to do. Seemed like the kind of thing where im adding clamps that someone would look at me and say... why the hell are you doing that.. but nice to know it's often done. Annoying...

Easy way to fix joists steady

Thanks - makes it look so easy! I don't have access to other side of joist in some occasions where space is tight or it's a ledger, so would be toe-nailing. Assume this is still applicable?

Easy way to fix joists steady

Thanks all I’ll give these a try this afternoon. Is it still a good shout to be using screw over nails? I see arguments for both but basically It seems screws have more holding power while nails handle flex better. Most advice is American so curious what’s done here when no nail gun is used (as...

Easy way to fix joists steady

Hi all - I’ve been building my first deck which I’ve previously asked a few questions about on here. Outer frame is all squared up and I’m up to hanging the bearers and joists. I’m not cross battening but just running 47x100 joists off main bearers from an outer frame. The newbie problem I’m...

    Deck footings direct on slab

Hi all - realise I’ve been posting a bit about a deck I’m about to start (have been clearing all weekend) and really appreciate all the help so far. Massively helpful community. When ripping up old deck I found way more concrete underneath than I expected, and there’s a huge slab I’m able to use...

    Deck ledger placement with DPM

thanks a bunch. Dpm will be a bit of a guessing game but I’ll just take my time. One quick q; for spacers do you recommend plastic shims over metal washers?

    Deck ledger placement with DPM

thanks for the reply. First my builder told me as he knew I was planning a deck, but it’s also what I’ve read most online. This website states it’s the most common to do that but says you can go above as long as you don’t hit the dpm. So maybe it’s more just avoid avoiding of piercing it than...

    Deck ledger placement with DPM

Yes but I suppose by using a thicker joist I could offset where the holes would be. I hust had read that you should never drill above the dpm, but with a gap is it okay to do so?

    Deck ledger placement with DPM

Hi all - I'm building a deck and and placing a ledger against two external walls of the house. Something I'm unsure about is the placement of the bolts (just planning to use knock-in throughbolts) in relation to the DPM. Now I always thought you'd want to go below the DPM as then any water...
