attaching light fixture to ceiling rose

That's what I originally thought John. I just wondered if there was an easier way that wouldn't involve lifting the floor in the bedroom upstairs as it's a pig of a job as a lot of stuff will have to be moved out of the room. :x

hiding the expansion gap around a fire hearth

I've seen small wood effect slips for hiding the expansion gap around a fireplace hearth. It is shaped like coving and I was wondering what is the best way to secure it to the floor or hearth. I don't think that securing it the floor would be a good idea as the floor could possibly expand in...

Connections for end of speaker flex

Why would running 2 lengths of 24 gauge speaker cable in an expansion gap ruin the floor :?: The skirting board hasn't even gone on yet so now is the ideal time to run the cables. The cable from the speaker is 24 gauge cable. I was going to use a flat blade crimp terminal for jointing purposes.

Correct me if I'm wrong but if there was a problem with the back...

What's the best material for use building in around back boilers? Vermiculite is suitable isn't it? I'll need to brick up a bit as well. Is there anything wrong with ordinary brick and mortar butting up against the side of the boiler?

    plasterboarding

The batons on the wall are running across the wall. The plasterboard will be running with the long side down the wall. So what you said will be the way the sheets will end up on the wall.
