    Are Newel posts structural?

Thanks. I would want the stairs to look similar, it was more whether the stairs can be supported without two newel running through from Ground Floor to Second Floor.

    Are Newel posts structural?

Is it possible to do these stairs slightly differently without the newel posts between 1F & 2F quarter landings?

    Are Newel posts structural?

Are Newel posts a structural part of the stairs? I have been proposed the staircase below, but would prefer not to have newel post between first and second floors as this will make the stairs feel less open. Are they required to support the 2nd floor landings?

Building Regs for Doors & Windows

But not if it is open. A rail was a last resort of I had specified heights that were below the regs height.

Building Regs for Doors & Windows

Phew, thanks. Had me worried that I had scored an own goal and requested too low a sill which was about to get expensive (or I'd have had to have a rail across the opening ?!?).

Building Regs for Doors & Windows

Ok, I may have a problem, grateful for any further advice/clarification. I have paid for windows to be at 800mm (860mm incl Frame) from FFL. I was basing it on K2 - below - but read it as 800mm for windows? Have I read this wrong?

Building Regs for Doors & Windows

Thanks, that may help on the MOE. I am replacing crittall with timber. In theory that makes them worse? Or am I overthinking things?!? That is helpful on toughened glass. i actually was thinking the height where you have to put protection from falling? I will keep cill height at 800mm...

Building Regs for Doors & Windows

Thanks. Are MOEs just required for new openings? Or do replacement windows also need to be upgraded to MOE (on 1st floor)? Also what is minimum height for window. 800mm to bottom of sill, to top of sill, or top of lower frame? Thanks.

Thanks, I will look at Evohome too. The UFH is one zone (kitchen/diner); the utility/study/hall/sitting room are rads.

    How many zones ?!?

My contractor has suggested the following 'zones': HW, UFH, Rads. He didn't think it was worthwhile separating the 2 floors as the temp on the upper floor will be dictated by heat rising from 1st floor. Does this sound like a sensible choice? or would I be better splitting GF & 1F? I am...

    Bay Window

Yes, a square bay. It is timber windows with integrated timber posts. Builder would have preferred to use his own posts - but they are integral to windows. So will the builder create a 'C' shaped plate around the top, supported by temporary props, with short joists running between wall and...

    Bay Window

I am having a bay window in my extension. The bay is being built by the builder; the window is being supplied by the windows supplier. The corner post are attached to the windows. I am not very clear on two the two parts will join. Is there a typical detailing? Presume that the base of...

    Quick books

What do you want it for? Small business books? I have been using Wave; I find it pretty intuitive, it's free and I reckon that it could work well for most small businesses. (AFAIK Xero is the leader in cloud accounting for small businesses but has a fee)

Supplier has said that the door lock is from a German company called FUHR. But not sure if that is the multi point or the euro cylinder.

    DIY Aerial Install

Thanks for the advice. Has led me to have a rethink; I pretty much exclusively use sky at the moment. Would it be crazy not to have an aerial at all?

    Door lock security standard

Thanks. Surprising really. In the old days you needed to be BSI. Now multi pint = job done.

    Door lock security standard

Is there a security standard for multi point locks? And would that cover the lock mechanism, or the cylinder, or both? What should I be looking out for? Thanks Thanks.

    Builders opening

I want to install a wood burner. The current opening is 55cm which I suspect is too narrow. Is it likely there is a lintel in this scenario. Is it usually reasonably easy to open up a fireplace to accommodate a wood burner? I suspect I would want a stove 45cm wide, so suspect I would need an...
