Are Newel posts a structural part of the stairs? I have been proposed the staircase below, but would prefer not to have newel post between first and second floors as this will make the stairs feel less open. Are they required to support the 2nd floor landings?

simple answer
they are always structural as the handrails and banisters are supported by them
if you mean can they support other than the banister then yes
but not always a landing needs full support if you remove support from one source you need to add by another route

In the picture shown the newel posts are providing structural support to the staircase so you can't remove them.

Is it possible to do these stairs slightly differently without the newel posts between 1F & 2F quarter landings?

Impossible to say without knowing how much space is available in the stairwell or whether the stairwell could be increased in size . A spiral staircase might fit in the stairwell as you have it.

Thanks. I would want the stairs to look similar, it was more whether the stairs can be supported without two newel running through from Ground Floor to Second Floor.
