Finishing Plastered Ceilings With Stone Walls ??

Some of the gaps are pretty wide. It's not going to be that practical to stuff such uneven gaps around all the ceilings in this way, especially considering it's going against just a 12mm thick board on the one side. I thought maybe there was some other solution. Perhaps a coving with a thick...

Fire Cement vs Regular Cement ??

I didn't realize gases from combustion would damage regular cement. If lime mortar doesn't have such an issue, I'll use that.

Finishing Plastered Ceilings With Stone Walls ??

Thanks for the reply. Some of the gaps around the stone are pretty big - I'm not sure how it could have been plastered straight up to the stone. Even if it had been, surely a bit of expansion/contraction would eventually have caused such pieces to break loose? Are there any other alternatives...

Fire Cement vs Regular Cement ??

I'm going to repoint a fireplace which I've opened up, but I want to understand the difference between regular cement and fire cement. Is there really any difference? As far as I knew regular cement was already pretty fire resistant. Or will the heat of a fire eventually cause some issues if...

Finishing Plastered Ceilings With Stone Walls ??

I have an old cottage, which has exposed stone walls inside. My problem is, how to finish the plaster against the stone neatly around the ceiling? Because of the unevenness of the stone, the plasterboard has of course left gaps right around. Filling the gaps doesn't really look possible with...

Bathroom Basin/Sink Waste - Horizontal Extension?

Ahh, the first and second look like they could work! I'm not sure which is better. Price seems to be about the same though. The second would use too much space I think. The IKEA one is best designed for what I need, because it uses the least amount of height. Between the top of the...

Bathroom Basin/Sink Waste - Horizontal Extension?

I am building a timber washstand, which is going to have a surface mounted basin on top, in the center. The waste on the sink will also be in the very middle. A little below the counter-top, there's going to be a drawer. My problem is, the waste/trap beneath, is going to stick down, and...

Plastering Under Kite Winder Stairs - Mesh?

Hi, I'm about to have a new staircase plastered, and I'd like the top winder to be smooth and curved. I've seen it done, where the plasterer uses some metal wire mesh, to produce the shape, prior to the plastering. Is there a specific name of this product? Where can it be bought from?

Wall Anka looks pretty good. But I guess won't work with Thermalite blocks?

Radiator on dot & dabbed Thermalite wall?

Can a radiator be mounted on a Thermalite wall which has been dot & dabbed? If so, which fixings would be best to use?

    Radiator on stud wall?

How can I fix a radiator to a stud wall, when the timber isn't in line with the fixings on the back of the radiator (towel radiator)? Hanging from the plasterboard isn't something I want to do, nor is breaking open the wall to fix additional noggins. A wooden batten fixed horizontally into...

    Plastering Stone ?

I've never heard of this term before :cautious: Is there anything else that should be done prior to plastering? Anything to prepare the wall to give better results? Thanks

    Plastering Stone ?

I'm due to have part of my house plastered and was wondering if there would likely be any issues with plastering onto the old stone walls? It was originally plastered, I guess with something lime based, as it's from 1870s, however I hacked it all off as it was in bad condition in many areas...

    Opening A Fireplace - 1870s House

Thanks for all the replies! Sorted the fireplace today. Ended up getting a lintel put in, just to be on the safe side. The arch would probably have been alright, but who knows.

    Opening A Fireplace - 1870s House

Yeah, the bottom piece of the central brick is loose. I'd cement it into place before doing anything. Also there are ply boards upstairs, I just pulled it back to show how the upstairs chimney is built into it. My only concerns with the arch, are that it's a pretty shallow one, though saying...

    Opening A Fireplace - 1870s House

Yea, the brick arch I have no intention to remove, just the space below it, as drawn in the first photo. Looks like there's a natural opening there. Of course I wouldn't undermine either side of the arch and would repair that split brick first. Once the fireplace is opened up, I'd like to...
