Repair after down light removal -which filler

I've found Screwfix's No Nonsense lightweight filler pretty useless, as it just slumps or runs out. Branded stuff from, eg, Polyfilla is fine - but only if you can smooth off well enough to avoid having to sand. For anything needing sanding, Toupret.

    Priming plastic

Dulux Weathershield Multisurface is explicitly sold as suitable for uPVC. I've only ever used it on wood myself.

Filling countersunk screw holes in MDF

I did this recently on about a dozen lengths of skirting and just used lightweight filler (Polyfilla One Fill or similar if of a decent brand). No sanding necessary. The screw hole locations are still just visible after painting but I don't mind that as I can easily find them if I need to lift...

How To Combat Bedroom Humidity/Hay Fever?

My largely-dormant hay fever has been terrible this past week, with very high pollen levels. May just be that for you.

    Powered respirator recommendations please

Thanks blup. Price query is the high cost at both times, not the rise per se.

    Powered respirator recommendations please

I need a new one. My 16-year-old JSP Powercap still works OK - being a hay fever sufferer, just used it in the garden for an hour with high pollen count and I'm OK - but is showing its age. It's very tatty, the velcro securing strap is dying and the visor is heavily scratched. I sweat a lot and...

Keypad for entry to front door?

But not one of those or any other brand that looks like it! They are dead easy to break into - YouTube will show you how easy. In fact I'd like a good keysafe for my house but haven't been able to find one yet, only variations on the above.

What type of paint do I need

I did a length of 5-year-old (thus weathered) fencing last year with Sikkens HLS followed by their Filter 7 - one coat of each - because I happened to have quantities of both lying unused. Great results, but probably too expensive for many people to consider.

    Anyone used power-tool-battery.co.uk?

It's Ni-Cad. I'll see if I can find someone to replace the cells. Thanks all.

    Anyone used power-tool-battery.co.uk?

And if so were you happy with them? They seem to be the only place in the UK claiming to stock a battery for an old right-angle Bosch blue drill of mine. It costs about £40 which is a bit under half the price of the pukka Bosch part, but the latter seems to be out of stock everywhere anyway. So...

    Outdoor Drain Blockage

At least here in Thames Waterland, as soon as a drain joins someone else's, it's their responsibility to maintain, even if under private land. That applies to my and my next door neighbour's houses.

    Toilet seat incorrectly fitted?

I have just replaced the slippy-slidy bottom-fix bog seat in my non-resident partner's place with a £30 Croydex one which not only offers bottom or top fix (I chose the latter) but also has adhesive pads under the hinges with a clever way of keeping them held off the pan until you are sure the...

Getting these rugs to stay down

I just put my foot on one end of the rug and vacuum away from me, lifting the vac head off the rug for the backstroke.

Changing TRV valve without draining the system

Personally I never change a valve without draining as much of the system as necessary first. Don't like floods! With respect to your question, if the tails are in good condition or can be made so, I just use a little silicone grease around the olive; makes any future dismantling easier. If I...

    Investment property viewing

I would never buy a property without a proper survey, but even then in my experience the reports tend to be full of stuff like "there may possibly be penetrating damp in xxx and we recommend that a specialist contractor be engaged to advise". I recall having what was then called a structural...

Wiring new light fitting. One of the ceiling cables has 2 brown wires instead of the expected brown and blue....please help.

Just to be pedantic, Ireland (the republic) is not treated as foreign in UK law - and the Common Travel Area arrangement allows UK and Irish citizens to travel, work and settle freely in each others' countries. Neither is Ireland in the Commonwealth, so it has a unique status in UK law. Every...

    Choiceof CU

I had some excellent electricians replace my old CU with an all-RCBO one four years ago and they installed one from Lewden - of which I had at the time never heard. All well since.

    Front path gate post

But treated wood may not take paint easily or at all, at least until it's been weathered for a few years.

BGas say our 5amp fuse feed has damaged boiler.

In the days when I was stupid enough to have a BG annual boiler-service contract, I once had a BG "engineer" (pah!) insist that, in my heating system with a heat-only boiler and S-plan pipework, the central heating and hot water primary circuits were entirely separate bodies of water.

    Programmer Confusion

Not unlike my system. My programmer is two-channel and I leave the heating on constantly but controlled by a wireless thermostat in the hallway. I have set the hot water to heat twice a day for two hours each and that gives me plenty (most of the time I am on my own). However the previous...
