I’m replacing the rotten gate post for my front gate. The old one is 75mm x 75mm which seems to be a standard size

I will prime and paint it then put a cap on top

I’m after a nice smooth finish, not rough but I’m having problems finding the right timber post

Any help gratefully received

The sheds do planed treated posts, which can be cut down to size, and caps added. Oak posts are available on the internet and from independent timber merchants.

But treated wood may not take paint easily or at all, at least until it's been weathered for a few years.

I've found garden furniture paint adheres well with a light sanding, also masonry paint works, the microporous surface lets the wood breath but helps adhesion.

Thanks, I was thinking of using some Zinsser cover stain for priming a treated post. The finish's on them is going to be pretty rough even with several coats of pain isnt it?
