    Labeling cables

No offence taken, you've stated your concern with a lot more tact than I've sometimes seen on here! I've actually got three jobs to do that could be construed as risky: 1. Remove old black-rubber and fabric sheathed cables and associated metal trunking - these are definitely not...

    Labeling cables

Hi all, Apologies for putting up two posts within minutes of each other! As I mentioned in my other post, I'm just about to start some wiring work downstairs - removing some redundant old cable and adding some network cables, probably around 20 or 30 runs to various parts of downstairs...

Twisted black and red wires under my floorboards?

Okay, point on the screwdriver is nice and clear. :) Is there a better tool to use, or is it just a case of working with everything off at the CU? Re pictures, they'd not show very much I'm afraid - they literally are just random strands of thin red and black wire twisted around each other...

Twisted black and red wires under my floorboards?

Hi all, I'm just about to start cleaning up under my crawlspace, which means removing loads of old redundant conduit and disconnected cable runs. Should be fun. I can trace all of the cable to make sure it's dead at each end, and I've got one of them screwdrivers that detects live...

    Pipes creaking when they heat

Hi all, Anyone have an easy solution to this one? I've run a piece of copper pipe through a hole I've drilled in the joist - the pipe was 15mm, the hole was 22mm, but even so there's still a creaking noise as the pipe heats up. Is there anything I can inject around the pipe that...

Changing 15mm Radiator pipes to 10mm

As long as all of the microbore pipework comes from a single good source (eg 22mm pipework, or at a push 15mm if it's not feeding any other radiators) this sounds reasonable to me. Russ

    Pex pipe and combi

Not meaning to have a dig at anyone on here, but this kind of statement is a little irritating - quite often I've seen plastic dismissed on here just "because it's plastic" and there seems to be a resentment because it's too easy? (Which of course it is) That however is a fair point - and...

    adding a new radiator

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe microbore is anything smaller than 15mm, eg 10mm or 8mm. My system was full of the stuff, before I replaced it all, in my opinion it looks ugly as sin if it's not neatly fitted! Can't beat 2 nice smart 15mm pipes running straight down from...

    Pex pipe and combi

If it's any use, I'll add my massively inexperienced perspective on this one. I've got a combi boiler setup, and I've just repiped all of my downstairs rads in plastic - 22mm JG Speedfit, with pushfit reducing tees and 15mm pipe coming up under each rad. Compression fitting joins the...

Central heating feeds to/from Baxi Duotec

The Baxi manual just describes the tails as 3/4" male - I've actually fitted the return feed back to the boiler using these tap connectors and so far it's working, but I'm wondering if there's any techie reason why this might fail in the future? Thanks everyone for the advice so far. :) Russ

Central heating feeds to/from Baxi Duotec

Unfortunately, the tails that came with the boiler were soldered in to existing pipework, which was a bit of a disaster - went from upstairs to downstairs via a really conspicuous route, came back upstairs again to feed the upstairs radiators before going back downstairs again at the other side...

Central heating feeds to/from Baxi Duotec

Thanks for the feedback Tony, what I actually mean are the 22mm x 3/4" right angled compression fittings, something like: Russ :)

Central heating feeds to/from Baxi Duotec

Hi all, Does anyone happen to know if I can use a standard bend 3/4" tap connector to connect the central heating feeds to and from a Baxi Duotec boiler? We've recently done some work on our system which has meant new tails to the boiler. Also, does it matter what washer I use? Rubber vs...

Fitting new CH pipework downstairs - Speedfit BPEX?

15,000btu sounds good news - I did a quick calculation and I think the 3 rads came to around 12,500btu. :D

Fitting new CH pipework downstairs - Speedfit BPEX?

Hi all, I'm planning on refitting some of the pipework in my crawlspace supplying 3 radiators - I've been doing some wiring down there, and there seems to be one helluva lot of redundant pipes from old radiators that were removed. I'm also planning on fitting TRVs which will need new tails...

Great stuff, thanks o2bfree! Can you recommend any particular valves? Thanks again, Russ

    Central heating on two circuits

hi All, I am just about to begin installing a bunch of thermostatic radiator valves on my home central heating, but the existing plumbing seems very inefficient. Is it possible to have upstairs and downstairs running on separate circuits, with some kind of valve distributing the boiler...

    Fitting oven in kitchen

Hi all, I'm in the process of decorating my kitchen (have been for months it seems!), I've got the walls all boarded up, cable's run ready for the electrician to do final fixing (getting the sockets on, connecting to the consumer unit, etc), but I'm wondering about the oven install. I've...

    Plasterboard without skim?

Hi all, I'm looking for some help with some plasterboard I need to put up. :S I've got a bunch of sheets of tapered-edge plasterboard that I'm going to be putting up in my kitchen using plasterboard adhesive, the walls are traditional brick construction. I'm hoping to NOT have to skim or...

New fixed appliance sockets inside kitchen cupboards?

Do you mean the socket is inside the carcass, or outside? I don't think we'll have space - the appliances are going to be right up against the sides of the adjacent cupboards I think! :S I was thinking put the socket inside the cupboard, remove the plug from the appliance, thread the cable...
