Newly plastered walls – some spots don't take paint

OK cool, maybe I'll give it a try. Doing a bit of Googling I see that some people do use a brush for the mist coat, the reason given seems to be that it is less messy than a roller.

Newly plastered walls – some spots don't take paint

I was told somewhere (can't remember now) that for the mist coat it's a good idea to use a brush, as it somehow helps the paint penetrate. Obviously I use a roller for the top coats. Is it just as good to use a roller for the mist coat too? If so, maybe I will switch to use that – would save a...

Newly plastered walls – some spots don't take paint

Ah OK. So when does he use that and why has it got on the surface of the plaster? Is this something that he's doing wrong (if so I will let him know). Also, any tips what to do in this situation (other than just trying to repeatedly paint over it)? Thanks.

Newly plastered walls – some spots don't take paint

I've been wondering about this for a while and thought I'd ask people here. We've had a couple of rooms plastered – very good plasterer. But I always seem to find a few spots and areas where the mist coat doesn't seem to 'stick'. After the plaster has dried I prepare for painting by giving...

    Screeching outside tap

Our tap in the garden screeches like crazy as you turn it on, although it quietens down when you reach full flow. Mains pressure in our house is high, so that may be part of the cause. What would be the best way to try and fix this? I noticed that there is a a double 90º bend in the pipe just...

New bathroom tap is juddering and catching

OK thanks Mr Whitespirit. I'm not sure how B&Q would handle the refund since it was part of a suite... I guess they might give me something back. Worth a try. I've ordered a Grohe tap from Screwfix (http://www.screwfix.com/p/grohe-touch-basin-mixer-tap/80217) so will ask plumber to fit...

New bathroom tap is juddering and catching

Its clear to me that the problem is that the tap cannot deal with the pressure. If I run another cold tap nearby then the tap works OK. As soon as it has the full flow then it 'sticks' as you turn it on, then suddenly gushes out full force. So my question is really: (1) Is it likely that...

    My experience employing tradesmen

We've been having a lot of work done to renovate our house over the past 18 months and I've ended up employing a fair range of tradesmen directly – rather than going through a builder who then sub-contracts. Thought I would share a few of my observations/experiences. (1) I found I could save...

New bathroom tap is juddering and catching

Yes, it is a Plumbsure Crystal Basin Mixer: http://www.diy.com/nav/rooms/bathrooms/bathroom-taps/-specificproducttype-crystal/Plumbsure-Crystal-Basin-Mixer-11477541 It appears that it is actually not that cheap when bought on its own, but it was a lot cheaper as part of a whole set. It was...

New bathroom tap is juddering and catching

We had a new bathroom sink mixer tap put in a few months ago. It was one part of those sets from B&Q. After it was installed we noticed that the tap occasionally judders fairly loudly when turned on. And at other times it sort of catches with a bit of force and no water comes out until it is...

How can I fix a wobbly TRV?

Thanks for the info – will do that tonight

How can I fix a wobbly TRV?

I guess I could lower the radiator... would have to check that the pipe the other side can go down of course. While I'm sorting this out I'm thinking of just capping the leaky pipe for now (so we get our hot water back!), then sorting this out once we've finished decorating and I have more...

How can I fix a wobbly TRV?

Ha! Well spotted. I'm not sure that I have that extra play in the pipe to get the extra half inch. Now I'm thinking that the plumber I got in last year to install these radiators was a lazy *%@*. I bet he made the upright pipe too short, then tried to bodge it by connecting the TRV anyway...

How can I fix a wobbly TRV?

When going to remove a radiator, so we can decorate our hallway, I noticed that the TRV was wobbly - so that the joint between the TRV and the vertical pipe into it was moving, even though the nut was fully tightened. Also noticed it is prone to leaking a bit. On the other radiators in the...

Is this likely to be asbestos?

Our house had a piece of board used to block up a doorway between the kitchen and a downstairs bedroom. I wondered if it could be asbestos. I unscrewed it and managed to remove it without much breakage, wearing a decent mask. I've put the board in the garden. Can anyone advise whether this...

New velux window leaking inside the frame

Catlad: you're totally right. I just took all those bits of flashing off, swapped them over, and they now extend all the way down. I've told my builder and I hope he feels like an idiot. Thanks a lot for your suggestion! I just hope it doesn't leak now. It definitely looks neater...

New velux window leaking inside the frame

Catlad: when you say 'side rails' do you mean the metal pieces that are screwed down on top of the wooden frame? I noticed that those bits of metal don't go all the way down, but stop about an inch or so above the black plastic end caps. Which seems a bit odd as it leaves about an inch of...

New velux window leaking inside the frame

Hi We had a new velux put in our loft conversion last year. It is a GHL M04 type window. Now that the room is decorated and we've moved in there, I've noticed it has started to leak in the lower right hand corner, inside the frame. Water is somehow getting inside the frame from the right...

Hi 25401pike - did you ever sort this out? I have a somewhat similar problem now, and am stuck on it.
