    Hire Floor Hygrometer ?

Flat was built in '68-69, and i'm on the ground floor. I'll take some pics of the floor when i get a moment. Plan is to Liquid DPM (if needed); Level off floor as there's a height step between the bedrooms and the hall, lay insulation, a sub floor and then flooring (carpet / engineered wood)...

    Hire Floor Hygrometer ?

Is it possible to hire a Floor Hygrometer (I'm in the surrey area)? I've spent a good half hour searching google and the cheapest units to purchase I can find are at about £100 - £140. seems a lot to spend for what will hopefully be only a few measurements. Additionally, when using one...

    2.5mm T&E in 16mm OD conduit ?

My flat final ring circuit is wired using 2.5mm PVC singles via 16mm conduit buried in the concrete slab (apart from vertical runs up walls to sockets). I'm considering running new T&E where i want to split the ring rather than a hidden maintenance free junction (such as crimp butt joint) -...

    2.5mm T&E in 16mm OD conduit ?

What do you reckon my chances are in running 2.5mm T&E through existing 16mm OD conduit with an unknown number of bends (but at least 2) ?

    Re-routing incoming Virgin Media cabling

I am rennovating my flat, and adding internal insulation which means moving all my services. Although I don't currently use it, there is VM cabling run into my flat that I would like to move. What I am thinking is to fit an IP64 box on the wall outside and to run the existing VM cabling...

Insulating & boarding out existing concrete slab

I am gearing up to insulate my ground floor flat concrete slab. The bedrooms currently have vinyl tile stuck to the floor and the hall / lounge has teak fingers stuck (and i use that term loosely) with bitumen. there appears to be a slight height difference of ~ 1mm between the height of the...

    Routing cabling on ceiling

I am dropping my ceiling by ~ 60mm to install some thermal / acoustic insulation to reduce the degree of transmitted sound from the flat above and am considering moving the location of the ceiling light / light switches, with the exiting cabling single core run in embedded conduit. If I choose...

Do I need to install vapour barrier ?

In insulating my ground floor flat I am wondering whether I need to install vapour barrier on the following, I am using Knauf RS60 in both instances : Party wall between my flat and adjacent flat. Wall is of a cavity wall construction and room on other side is a kitchen Ceiling of my flat...

    Fixing into overhead concrete beams

When I spoke to the landlord / management agents about the work I am doing and how to fix into the ceiling they said to fix into the beams - hence the question. Looks like i'll just have to do some pilot holes and see what's up there.

    Fixing into overhead concrete beams

I will be shortly fixing battens to the ceiling of my flat which is of a (1968) block & beam construction, or equivelent, with the base of the blocks sitting nominally flush with the base of the beams, in order to insulate & drop the ceiling. The beams are ~150mm acroos the base (got no idea...

Diameter of vent pipe on vented HW cylinder

Yup, was just hoping that I didn't have to - it's a heck of along run out the flat and up the utility riser to the header in the attic. Ah well one more letter to the landlord to ask for permission to do something then. Any suggestions on whether to keep the run in copper or use poly pipe...

Diameter of vent pipe on vented HW cylinder

Apologies for the confusion, it made sense to me when I wrote the question. I mean the diameter of the vent pipe on my open vented system on my Megalife cylinder (not Megaflo as originally stated)

Diameter of vent pipe on vented HW cylinder

How critical is the diameter of the vent pipe on a HW cylinder ? the run from the hot water tank in my ground floor 1968 built flat is in 15mm, (or the imperial equivelant). When I replaced the tank for a Megaflow, it never occured to me at the time that i may need to upgrade the vent pipe...

cabling - Solid vs stranded cores

This (somewhat academic) question has been rattling round my brain for a while so I thought I'd ask it out loud. Aside from method of manufacture, is there any difference between say 1.5mm sq solid care and 1.5mm sq stranded core ? Why use solid core for the manufacture of T&E, but...

Max number of fused spurs off a final ring

I'm sure I've seen somewhere in the 17th Edn. something that defines the maximum number of fused spurs allowable on a final ring circuit in terms of the number of sockets that are currently fitted. Can anyone point me in the right direction ?
