I wondered about that too. I only removed plaster so it looks like the plaster was applied directly to the beam around the edge of the ceiling. So I guess I'd have to do the same in order to repair it.

Thanks for the replies. I turned off the cold water supply and thought I'd take out the cartridge and take it to a plumbers merchants to get an identical one. However, despite liberal application of WD40, I can't unscrew the thing. Looks like I'll have to consider other options.
