Water tank full but taps not running

Thanks Terry. This is the float and when I press it down water is flowing into the tank. It seems to be only the cold taps, and now the washing machine, that are affected.

Water tank full but taps not running

I should say, the hot taps, even though it isn't hot water, were running to an extent but seem to dry up if left for a little while. Likewise, there is water in the kitchen taps that were isolated and the shower, but I haven't seen how long for. And the toilet cistern isn't filling up.

Water tank full but taps not running

Hi Terry. We had a plumber isolate the kitchen sink tap before we went away because there was asbestos near the sink that needed to be removed. Anyway, I then turned off the entire water system before going away as I read this was a good thing to do when going away. The stopcock/valve is...

Water tank full but taps not running

Hi there. I turned my water valve off before going on holiday. I've returned today, turned the valve back on, but there is no water in the taps, or in the toilet to flush. I've checked the loft and the water is full in the water container. Have I done something wrong? Thanks.

How to fill the gap in the floor?

I've had to replace a few floorboards in my bedroom. I've replaced them with these Wickes white wood boards. However, as you can see, the gap that remains is thinner in width than the other six that have been filled. I have two more floorboards unused. Can I just saw one of them in half...

    Wood above window

hi there. My plasterer is going to sand and cement our walls and has asked me to hack off all the plaster to the brick. On one of the walls there was cement rather than plaster so I've been asked to take all that off too. I've taken it off above the window and it's exposed a wooden block with...

Baxi back boiler - not igniting

Hi there. I'm expecting the worst here, but my Baxi Bermuda 50/5 back boiler isn't igniting. The gas is working, because it's feeding the cooker. I turn the temperature gauge and it flicks with the igniter but never alights. The actually fire does ignite, but the boiler won't. So without...

    Damp proof co. are "replastering"

Hi there. I've been quoted £4,700 for damp proofing work to take place downstairs in my house. All the downstairs rooms are affected by the damp. £1,500 of this quote includes "Specialist Rendermix re-plastering". I was planning on replastering the walls anyway, to get rid of the wallpaper...

    Horsehair in plaster

    Horsehair in plaster

Hi, I'm removing plaster from my walls and came across this brown stuff / hair(?) in the plaster. It's not very widespread, but pops up every now and then. Does it look like asbestos or horsehair? Many thanks.

    Why are my floorboards green?

Thanks Pete. Out of interest, why wouldn't you have bare floorboards?

    Why are my floorboards green?

Third floorboard-related post from me in the last 24 hours and have received great advice so far. Next question, as I look to renovate these floorboards, why are some of them green? I'm worried it's mould and in that case I suppose I'll need new ones. Once sanded and varnished, would they...

    Floorboards smell of urine

Thanks. So they just effectively suck up the smell?! If hiring, how long for?

    Floor not entirely floorboards

Hello. I'm looking to restore the old floorboards in my living room. I ripped up the carpet and found that the previous owner had replaced the fireplace with a concrete slab and there's also a block of wood where floorboards could've been. I want the room to be entirely floorboards, but how...

    Floorboards smell of urine

Hello. The title says it all! We moved into a house where an old lady lived, and unfortunately one of the bedrooms has the albeit faint smell of old urine. I've used a bicarbonate of soda and vinegar mixture on it twice which has helped but the odour is still there. We're actually going to...

    Smooth out ceiling

Hello! I've stripped the wallpaper off my ceiling and want to paint it (ignore the walls!). It is in reasonable condition, but has a few little nicks from the remnants of the wallpaper. I just want to smooth it out so I can paint over it. What do I need to do? Will sugar soap alone do the...

    Stripped wallpaper. Now what?

Thanks Alastair. It's the brown stuff on the last picture. Thanks for that. The paste is just the paste between the wallpaper and the wall right? I can use a steamer on that? What's the best way to remove loose plaster? And a professional is the best bet to skim, I presume? Too hard to do...

    Stripped wallpaper. What next?

Thanks again. Watching how to guides on YouTube etc is no good then? Looks like I'll have to splurge for a plasterer then! After the plastering, do I just paint straight on to the plaster?

    Stripped wallpaper. What next?

Cheers Robbie. Would it be possible to do the replastering myself, with the aid of self help tutorials?! Could the insulation board contain asbestos?
