So the art of tidy installation isn't quite dead then

These are all well and good but they are 3 phase boards with plenty of room and only a few RCBO's try making such a neat job on a typical domestic board full of RCBO's, unfortunately there is just not enough room.

    Funny Cable

Its nothing to worry about, its just supposed to be easier to strip the ends with a set of side cutters thats all. I got some like this a while back from the electric centre, think it was draka cable but can't be sure. enjoy!

    immersion heater elements

Haha, well those are the readings I got. It doesn't matter anyway as I have slopey shouldered it onto the plumber. It was just the top element I wasn't sure about, thought it might have offered to heat the water up a little bit but there was no heat at all on the pipes.

    immersion heater elements

I was called out today to look at a factory with no hot water. It was a large cylinder tank with three immersion elements, top middle and bottom. Top, stat OK, element was I think 2.00 ohms but i can't remember for sure, no short to earth. Can hear faint bubbling when on Middle, stat...

Opinions and advice please on the electrician I used work

I think the old saying you get what you pay for applies here. You said he was the cheapest quote and that shows. Did the sparky actually see the job before he quoted for it? I wouldn't want that standard of work in my house but at the end of the day its just a garage and so long as he...

MK garage consumer unit tripping out

Yes live and neutral supply should go into the top of the rcd mainswitch, then out of the bottom of the rcd a neutral tail should supply the neutral busbar.

Need idiots instructions for wiring tridonic ballast

You say you have a twin flourescent fitting, that ballast is only for a single. On the right of the ballast, there are four terminals, you will see a small wiring diagram that represents the flourescent tube, two wires will go to either end of the lamp as it shows. On the left is where the...

    smoke alarm, seperate mcb reqd

I always double the smoke circuit with a lighting mcb at the consumer unit. If smoke alarms have a seperate mcb there is more chance of them being switched off and left off. Thats how I look at it but I know other people like to do things differently. I have never had any issues with building...

Any one familier with old overheads?

Was doing work on an old farm on monday extending overhead lines from to the farmhouse. The wire used for the earth was solidcore copper with a paperwrap and then a bright orange powdery coating. I never thought about it at the time but is it possible it was aspestos? The phase...

    rcd tripping

You've probably done this but switch off any switch fuses. Also is your central heating fed from this circuit? could be a knackered pump/valve.

    UF heating controls

I was struggling with how best to isolate the entire system safely. In the end I fed the the entire system boiler, pump, timeclocks and UFH manifolds, wiring centres etc from a sw/fuse neon next to the boiler which was marked 'heating.' But as the UFH were in different parts of the building...

    UF heating controls

think the last one I did needed 5 cores between each manifold. and then a twin from the maniold to the valves/boiler. so a twin and a 3 core. room stats are wired in 3core, one stat for each UFH zone. Will need a clock and not a clock stat also. If there are radiators upstairs then you will...

20mm oval conduit & metal back boxes

I'm not sure if there are oval adaptors avaliable or not but a lad I used to work with used a hacksaw to make cuts round the end of the conduit then he folded these back on themselves as they entered the KO box. seemed to do the job.

Fish Smell Using Shower Head Only

Im not being funny here but have you tried unscrewing the shower head and making sure there isn't a decomposing fish inside it? My knowledge of student life is not great but I have watched a few american 'frat house' style films in my time and that sounds like a prank someone might play...

    3phase and neutral

Thanks for your help. As you can tell Im not as familier as I would like to be with motor control. I dont think the neutral is for the coil, I think the neutral is for something to do with dust extraction and I think the saw motor will work without the neutral connected. The neutral does not...

    3phase and neutral

Yes its a DOl starter. The manual says It needs a neutral, I can't remember off the top of my head what its for but I think its an air brake. Aswell as the 3 cables going away to the motor it has a two core flex. Its a second hand machine and it looks like the starter is not standard. I...
