    White mortar.... suggested mixes

Ok, I've since learnt that paving sand is washed sharp sand, whereas silver sand is whiter to start with (~pure silica sand). A local merchant sells silver sand and lime so I'm thinking a 1:1:2 snowcrete:lime:silver sand mix, or even 1:1:3

    White mortar.... suggested mixes

Ok, you've caught me out. When I said my builder's sand "is almost red", it's actually much closer to your wickes sand than the stuff on the left. I had no idea sand came such a deep shade of red!

    White mortar.... suggested mixes

Ok, think I've nailed it. Wickes sell it as "Paving Sand", also known as Silver or Gardening sand but other merchants.

    White mortar.... suggested mixes

Ok, so I need to continue my search for a lighter shade of sand.

    White mortar.... suggested mixes

Hi, I've just laid some white paving and am looking to fill the joints (~7/8" wide) with whitish mortar. However I'm having difficultly locating white sand anywhere. b&q list it but in reality no stores stock it. I tried a mix of white cement (snowcrete) and sand 1:1, but my builders sand is...

Undermount Ceramic sink, fitting to granite underside

I was told by the granite fitters to make a shelve to support the weight. Sorted

    Adhoc underfloor heating

Actually I took the advice on board and decided not to proceed. Perhaps you're happy being spoon fed, but I like to understand the problem and if possible come up with innovative solutions. In this instance it was probably a stretch too far, but no harm in asking. I'm sorry if I've upset you.

Antisyphon trap. Alternative to air admittance value?

Thx for the advice guys. I actually have the waste pipe cut open at the moment without any trap at all, and the room still doesn't smell. I have good access to the area, so I'll probably fit the appliances to the foul side without a trap, relying on the natural trap of the appliance...

Antisyphon trap. Alternative to air admittance value?

I was thinking that the appliance would have a natural trap, being the pump full of water. But thinking about it some more I guess the pump probably operates until all water has been flushed out and so the pump contains air in its rest state, so probably not such a good idea to bypass the trap

Antisyphon trap. Alternative to air admittance value?

Can I just try another quick q since you seem pretty clued up? I've noticed that sink-traps that include an appliance connector (usually washing machine) have the appliance on the clean side of the trap. Is it a big no-no to have the appliance on the foul side? Both washing machines and...

Antisyphon trap. Alternative to air admittance value?

I'm shopping to replace my waste fittings during a kitchen refit and I've stumbled across traps with an "antisyphon" valve built in, which sounds identical to an Air Admittance Value AAV. If I by this trap then can I cross the AAV off my shopping list? The AAV is more pricey than the trap so...

    Unknown fatter waste pipe

Hi DIYers. I'm in the process of my first kitchen install and have had a productive weekend gutting the kitchen. Now I need to move the sink waste across and am having trouble identifying the existing fittings. In the lower-left of the pic below you can see the waste come up from the floor...

Undermount Ceramic sink, fitting to granite underside

It's a Villeroy and Boch 60C, and has a 1" lip around the edge, so decent bonding surface area. But yes, I was sceptical about silicone being strong enough alone. But then I don't see much evidence on-line of ceramic sinks dropping out, so whatever everyone's doing to attach them it seems...

Undermount Ceramic sink, fitting to granite underside

I'm about to fit my own kitchen. I already have a granite supplier lined up. I've ordered a ceramic sink on-line. Now, how to fit? From my research there seems to be a mix between batten supports, clamping kits, and plenty of silicone sealant. The latter option sounds easiest to me, and...

    Adhoc underfloor heating

I'm listening but I've obv misunderstood. Can you tell me which temp is appropriate for UFH on a timber floor under porcelain tiles? My rads are currently set to 60c so I'm guessing your answer will be nowhere near that. Floor structure might be unstable? I mentioned that in my orginal...
