    2 lgihts One Switch

Any 3 Gang, 2 Way light swtches this size?

I don't really care what style the switches are as long as it all looks neat and tidy when done. When I eventually decorate, I will fit a normal 3 gang switch and fill in the remaining hole. If the dual box does not fit properly would it be acceptable to put a piece of wood over the hole...

Any 3 Gang, 2 Way light swtches this size?

Thanks for that Lectrician, The wiring appears in good order. (I'm not a sparks but feel confident at the simpler DIY tasks.) It's not the old rubber cable and does not seam to be degraded in any way. The house (originally built in 1955), was rewired at some stage but the old sockets...

Any 3 Gang, 2 Way light swtches this size?

I am in the process of replacing the old bakelite sockets and switches for new ones. In the Hallway I have a 3 gang 2way light switch that measures 83mm wide by 185mm high. I would like to replace it with one the same size of slightly larger if possible to avoid having to redecorate. I...

    RCD Sockets Active or Passive

Coulds anyone please answer in laymans terms what is the difference between Passive and Active RCD Sockets? Having found this great forum, I'm sure I need to replace a normal twin socket for an RCD one, for plugging in extension leads and using equipment outdoors, but don't know what type...

    Extending Wire for socket

Part 2 OK I've got my ratchet crimpers, I've got some Butt connectors, (Blue for the 2.5mm cable), The question is, once I've extended the wires do I need to protect the connection with insulation tape, choc box or anything? Thanks in anticipation, Mottsy

RCB trips on lightcircuit when bulb fails. Socket RCBs trip

Sorry to jump in on this thread, but I have plug in type B6 MCB's on my lighting circuits. (By plug in, I mean they have replaced the old wired fuses in my CU.) I have the same problem of them tripping when a bulb fails. Can I get these C6 ones that plug in. I had a quick look at screwfix and...

Circuit Breakers & RCD. What's the difference?

Thanks John. I'm at work so can't do a phot at the minute. The garage consumer unit is an old wired fuse type with the fuses replaced with MCB's. I don't think it will have a RCD fitted. In view of this what are my options? 1. A new garage consumer unit with RCD fitted. (I assume this...

Circuit Breakers & RCD. What's the difference?

Hi all, I'm not an electrician so please don't be offended if this is a silly question, but what is the difference between a MCB & RCD? The only reason I ask is the my garage has a small consumer unit with two MCB's. (One for lights and one for power.) Should I get a RCD socket fitted or...

    Gainsborough Electric Shower no heat!

Firstly, I’m not an electrician or a plumber. I had an electric shower in my old house that about every year to 18 months started going cold. The problem was scale. I don’t know if the restricted flow caused some safety device to cut out or what, but all I did was: 1. Turn of the electric...

TV Booster Powered from Lighting Circuit

Hi all, Hopefully an easy one for people of your caliber. A short while ago a TV ariel man fitted a new ariel to the roof and a four way TV booster in the loft to supply the telly's. I have just had a look at what hid did and to power the booster, he cut off the moulded plug and wired...

    Which DIY Wireless Burglar Alarm???

I've used a response wirefree alarm for more than 6 years with no problems. Four zones, part arming for night time use, (they do various models) and as you add sheds and garages or extensions you just buy the extra sensors you need. (If you move house you just take all the bits with you.)...

Do I need an Earth on a light switch?

Thanks Qedelec, I've done all the three pin sockets, just a few light switches left to go now. (Although some are two way and the old switches have no markings on them to show whats what, so I shall be having an interesting time!" Thanks again, Mottsy.

Do I need an Earth on a light switch?

Hi, I just replaced a one way single light switch in an under-stairs cupboard as it was an old bakelite one. The switch had fairly new twin and earth running to it and the outer sleaving removed where it entered the switch. The red wire was cut and connected to what I presume was the...
