Coulds anyone please answer in laymans terms what is the difference between Passive and Active RCD Sockets?

Having found this great forum, I'm sure I need to replace a normal twin socket for an RCD one, for plugging in extension leads and using equipment outdoors, but don't know what type to get. What are the pros and cons please?

P.S. the socket will be indoors so hopefully no Part P worries. I have used an RCD adapter in the past but would like a permanent solution.

Many thanks

Active ones will trip when they loose supply volts, or loose supply neutral.

Passive one will remain on until an earth fault occurs.

one trips when the power goes off, the other doesn't.

the one that trips is good when you have power tools or machinery connected. you dont want it starting back up again without warning.

the one that doesn't trip is good when you have fridges and freezers connected. for reasons i expect are obvious!
