To clarify what's been said:- The single black is the switched live (currently wrongly connected to the blue lampholder flex, should be the brown). The two blacks are the neutrals (currently wrongly connected to the brown lampholder flex, should be the blue).

I think you'll just have to be very careful when cutting in, Pick a day when it's cool and not sunny, and take your time in doing some reasonable cutting in without rushing it.

What are you actually painting? Walls? Fascias? Windows?

I would always tend to run separate cables from the switch to each light, for the very reason the lights could be separately switched in the future. Then again, out of habit, logic, personal preference, I always put the feed or feeds in the common, and the light in the remaining terminal - so...

Easier to look inside each light, and see if both lights have one cable each (we hope).

How do you know the single brown isn't the feed? I bet it isn't though.
