Wood flooring - most durable and scratch resistant?

We will soon turn our attention to the lounge/dining room floor. It currently has a carpet, but underneath we have perfect 1960's pine floorboards and have the temptation to sand and wax/stain/varnish them. However, we really like the look of real-wood oak flooring and because I have fitted...

Pine doors - will they warp?

I have put new pine architraves and skirtings on all of the upstairs rooms. I have stained these using Ronseal brushing wax to give a medium oak appearance - they look very nice. I now want to have six-panel pine doors fitted to all rooms, with the intention of using the same wax on them...

    hardboarding bathroom floor - waterproofing?

I think that the hardboard measured only about 5mm thick - I can check as the carpets have not gone down yet. Looking at the data you kindly posted, it does mention varnishing plywood to make it water proof. Maybe I'll have to have do an experiment with some hardboard to see if that works...

    hardboarding bathroom floor - waterproofing?

Exterior ply would (I presume) only come in thicknesses greater than what I have used to hardboard the reast of the upstairs floors.

    hardboarding bathroom floor - waterproofing?

Having hardboarded the bedroom floors before carpetting, I now want to hardboard the bathroom floor before laying lino. I can seal the lino around the edges but know that water will still find a way in. Will this rot the hardboard? Should I perhaps varnish it?

Turning my loft into a dumping ground.

Hi Matt, I have exactly the same situation and I have just started to solve it. Because we needed to get our house rewired, I had the electricians install three strip lights and a couple of double sockets in the loft. I also made sure that any and all wiring for the upstairs lighting got...

Big pipe in loft - any ideas?

Beneath that portion of the loft sits the large back bedroom. I have recently removed all of the wallpaper and redecorated, finding no signs of any chimney. Beneath that bedroom sits the dining room. We have not got around to decorating it yet, but we will eventually remove the all the...

    Types of floorboard for loft?

Thanks - a good idea! However, my electricians have already done all of the drilling through joists... :( I screwed down the first floorboards last night - doubly at every joist and it feels very solid so far.

Big pipe in loft - any ideas?

Thanks for all of the advise. It does look like the sections of the pipe would loosen and detach. Legalities of removal aside, could I not simply leave the two end sections - in the wall and in the roof and ditch the rest? I still don't understand why it goes into the wall between the two...

Big pipe in loft - any ideas?

Ahhh...yes, it does look like asbestos. No idea which boiler it belonged to. I guess removing the pipe might prove dodgy them :?

Big pipe in loft - any ideas?

We did have an old cylinder that got removed last year - but it existed at the other side of the loft. I have just inspected closed and decided againsts plastic - rather a cold, hard material that souds like pot when knocked upon.

Big pipe in loft - any ideas?

No - the bathroom exists at the other end of the house (along with the drainpipes and so on)

    Types of floorboard for loft?

I have now bought £300 of pine T&G floorboards from my local timber yard - they kindly cut and delivered to my requirements. I will start to fit these as soon as my foil blanket insulation arrives. The tounge and groove do not sit central to each floorboard edge - but nearer one surface than...

Big pipe in loft - any ideas?

I have this large grey plastic pipe in my loft. It originates from (presumably) the cavity between the semi-detached houses and then goes up through the roof near the chimneys. Can I remove it? We do have a separate chimney breast further down the loft wall. The woman next door had a...

    Maintaining loft ventilation?

I soon plan to lay foil insulation in my loft and then floorboard over it. I already have (some) old insulation in there (fibre glass wool stuff and loose foam chippings) and I will lay the foil blanket over the top, tacking to the joists as I go. We get high winds in my area and I worry...

    Thin loft insulation

I've just ordered a roll of foil insulation because I only have 3 inches between plasterboard and where the floorboards will sit. I'll let you know how it goes on.

    Loft ladder questions

The trapdoor to our loft exists in the doorway to one of the bedrooms. Due to redecoration of those rooms, we don't have an option to move it. I want to install a pulldown ladder, but because of the door position, I have calculated that we cannot have one much wider than about 30cm wide and...

Best type of insulation for loft

Before I floor board the loft in my 1960's semi, I need to insulate it. It currently has a mix of old yellow wool (the nasty type that pricks your fingers and itches for days) and loose foam chippings that my electrician referred to as a "fire hazard", (and as a result he put the new cables...

    Types of floorboard for loft?

I have 3x2 celing joists and plan to board the loft for light storage. Because I have numerous ceiling hangers (vertical pieces of wood hanging from roof to joists to stop celings sagging), I decided not to use chipboard panels, but rather normal floorboards which would prove easier to cut and...
